Is there something similar to teflon tape but a little thicker that I could use on hydraulic fittings? I have a power steering fitting on an English 4000 Ford with square type ferrels on a steel line. Looking for something to wrap the ferrel with to stop from leaking. Thanks!

Hi Larry,

Dave is correct about teflon tape and hydraulic systems. On critical systems such tape is outright prohibited because of the potential of pieces getting into the system.

I may not understand your problem correctly. I take it that the leakage is NOT past a threaded connection such as pipe threads but rather past a brass ferrule on a piece of steel tubing? I am not sure what a "square type" ferrule is even...something special the Brits use?

However, my experience with ferrule type fitting connections has been rather poor. They tend to leak due to overtightening and crushing the ferrule...something that always happens to me with my "heavy hand".

If that is the case, and it is possible, clearance and equipment wise, I recommend you investigate changing out the connection from a ferrule style to an SAE 45 deg flare style. They work must better for me in sealing that type of power steering connection.

I would use anything but teflon tape! This stuff can cause problems in hydraulics if it gets into the system, and it does. Most hydraulic shops don't like it,but the paste is ok.

I agree, tape can cause problems if it gets into a hydraulic system. That's why it is recomended to always leave one thread untaped.

I found some thicker teflon tape. It's pink but the fittings don't seem to mind.

Teflon tape comes in various thicknesses. Talk to your plumbing supply and see if they have it or can get you some.

Hi Larry,

What you want is called, Leak Loc, a blue high pressure thread sealer good to 500 degrees and 10000psi. Be warned that it will be very difficult to get the joint apart after using the sealer.

Most refrigeration supply companys stock it, WW Grainger, Johnstone Supply.

I agree with Leak Loc. It's great stuff. It will seal ANY threaded connection. But you're right it does make the joint tougher to get apart, and it's messy gets on tools, fingers, everywhere. Alcohol will solve it if used soon enough. Wouldn't be without a tube of the stuff around the shop.

I vote with T_Bone also. Be sure to follow the directions for cleaning prior to application and you'll seal whatever you coat with it;Leak-Loc made by Loc-Tite. I reverted back to the paste thread sealer when a thread seal is needed, it works well and will not cause problems like the tape does.

My tube of Leak Lock says it is made by Highside Chemicals, but anyway I've found it to be good stuff.
