Source of water for Pressure Washer

I bought a pressure washer this past weekend. Based on post here, I got a 3500 psi @ 3.5 gpm Cat pump with Honda 13 HP engine, Hooked up to house water it works great.

I have a animal shelter seperate from the house that does not have a water supply. I am thinking of using a 55 gal barrel of water as the source by putting a faucet at the bottom and connecting to the pressure washer. My pressure washer manual says not to, but I don't see why it would not work.

Any suggestions or ideas? Has anyone else done this? What was the outcome?

I got a little one (gas) at an auction last year.. and it works great. It has a pressure switch inside that won't even let me start it if the supply pressure isn't above 40 psi...

hope this helps,

Big Steve

It will work with a submersible pump supplying pressure. I was able to throw a pump in the lake and pressure wash the dock. (I have an el cheapo pressure washer). I only had to clean out the input filter twice in 5 hours of use.

It will work if you put the tank up on a stand so the water is gravity fed to the pump. Use a large ball valve - 1" full port and 1" re-enforced hose so it won't collapse to supply the pump. At the pump inlet take the garden hose adapter out and put a tee fitting in(do not reduce the inlet size plumbing going into the pump). Put the adapter back in on the run of the tee and position the branch of the tee up and install a small bleeder valve(1/ 4" rad drain petcock). Just remember to open the valve at your tank and open the bleeder to remove air in the supply line to prevent an air lock so your pump will draw right away. Keep your fittings good and tight(use good garden hose washers with screen) to prevent air entering the supply hose and crap out. You will know if a fitting is drawing air when the pressuse starts to drop off as you are using it or if it gets an air lock in the supply line. Good luck

Probably won't work. I know because I used a similar set up about 3 years ago to pressure wash the inside of a machine shed (too much bird poop). I had a hose coming out of a 375 gal. tank with reasonable flow when the tank was full. The pressure washer just couldn't get water fast enough; it also kinda sucked the hose diameter down. Ended up using a small submergible electric pump to supply the water and it seemed to work ok.

With that setup you will not have an adequate supply of water. The pump will starve and cavitation may occur. You need a supply under pressure to have enough water to keep the pump supplied.
