Getting ready to buy my first timing light. Is there anything special or any special features that I should look for? How about brands? Don't know much about the lights themselves, I'm just trying to be an informed buyer. Thanksk for the help, guys.

In todays automotive repair shop, a timing light is practically obsolete, can't change timing anyway on todays cars. So I am seeing quite a few good ones in pawn shops, Snap-on, Penske, at a fraction of what they cost new. Even if you're using one on a vehicle with six volt, just clip the power leads to an extra 12 volt battery, John in Ne.

Get one with an inductive pickup for the plug sensor, not one where you hook in series with the plug and wire. If you are going to be timing older tractors and engines, get one with an advance meter. This will allow to time to total advance, not just initial timing. I have a Craftsman and have no complaints. Shop around, look prices and quality. You will see quite a spread. Doc

I bought one for my Buddy for his Christmas or Birthday gift. First thing we did was to tune up my old forlorn pick-up. Stupid part was that about half an hour later the Fuel-pump went and it also required a fuel tank. I bought his a Pep Boys, seemed to do pretty good job, I will recomend getting an extra bulb or two just to be on the safe side.
