Inkjet Cartridge Problems??

I guess this falls in the category of office tools. This board seems to be a pretty diverse group so Im hoping someone can help me find a way to actually use all of the ink in an inkjet cartridge. I have an HP Officejet that uses the 29 cartridge and it seems that more often than not the print quality goes south well before all the ink is gone. Ive used probably a dozen cartridges over the past few years and I can only remember two instances where the ink was totally depleted. I just had to change another cartridge because it was blurring and smearing the print and it was only half empty. I go through the normal cleaning exercise the HP suggests but this doesnt seem to help. At $30 a pop Id like to improve the mileage. Id appreciate any ideas you may have. Or if this is just the nature of the beast, should I be buying a laser now that they are in the $250 range??

Thanks in advance. Andy

PS: I only use new HP cartridges not the refills.

Some of the comments below are very useful. I have found that when I have trouble of this type, and the cleaning cycle doesn't take care of it, that removing the print head and cleaning it in a small cup with 1/8 of an inch of rubbing alcohol in it removes the old ink and dust residue. You may also use cotton swabs. You may then have to run several pages of self tests, but it probably will come around. I have had mixed results with refueling old cartridges.

I know you don't want to hear this, but it's probably time for a new printer. It is mind boggling how fast these items advance in just 2 or 3 years. I have both an ink jet and a laser. Both are HP. I thought the laser would be the cat's meow, but it "eats paper" and there seems to be no cure. A professional cleaning might help yours some, but I'd go for a new one if yours is a few years old. I'm about to replace my laser, because the new one cured the paper eating.

Thanks for all the input. I did notice on the old cartridge it's marked 40ml, which I assume is 40 milliliter. Don't know how this compares with previous cartridges.

Andy,

I'm the IT Director for an insurance company. What you're describing sounds a lot like a dirty print head. Let me explain. The HP inkjet cartridges have a print head. This is the gold area at the bottom of the cartridge. In most cases these heads for lack of a better term get " gummed up". Most of the time this is from lack of use. When these printers sit for a period of time the excess ink on the print head dries to a gummy consistency. When this happens just use a lint free cloth or a cotton swab and wipe this gummy stuff off the print head(gold area at the bottom) of the cartridge. Also check the carriage for ink buildup. This is the cradle that the cartridge sits in. A swab works well for this procedure. Good luck.

We have an OfficeJet downstairs in the admin office. It's doing the same thing you're describing - using half the ink in the cartridge. HP says it's a component failure. Costs more to fix it than to buy a new one, according to what I understand.

Andy, dust can cause the problems you are having with your HP printer(been there, done that). Try covering it up with a dust cover to keep it clean. Covering it up when it is not being used will prevent a LOT of problems with dirt and dust. You might also try a different kind of paper; some types of paper shed more fibers than others. I use Xerox premium bright white inkjet paper, and I love it!

You can also clean the printheads on the cartridges. Use a clean Q-tip and some distilled water. Be gentle with it, and you'll get the dried ink and trash off of the printhead. Let it dry before reinstalling it; once reinstalled, print several pages to check it and clean it again if necessary.

If you don't need to print in color, go for the laser printer! HP lasers are among the best on the market. You will love it.

I'm the technology weenie for the local school system, 1100 kids and 350 or so computers, and Lord only knows how many printers.

Long term, color inkjets are a ripoff. The local HP contract place won't even fix them any more, bench rate makes it cheaper to replace them. They hook ya with the fire sale price on the printer, then screw ya with the cost of supplies.

Lifetime cost of ownership for an inkjet runs about 17 per page on average. A laser is closer to 2. If a staffer wants a color inkjet in our school, they have to justify it, or we won't buy one.

I read that HP quietly REDUCED the amount of ink in their cartridges by 40% a few years ago... price (of course) remained the same.

Still, for light home use and printing photos there aren't any other economical choices available yet... when color lasers are on the market for $250 it will be different.

For now, I don't think any of the manufacturers are anxious to kill their cash cow while it still has milk in it.

How about the new "inexpensive" lasers, do you think they will be in that 2 cent/page range?

We use a lot of HP1200's, which are in the $400 range at educational discount prices, and yes, they are in the 2 range.

We haven't had any luck with refilled ink cartridges on our printers, but refilled toner cartridges work fine for us.

I don't know about HP printers but when I purchased my computer it had a Canon BJC250 printer and learing I couls buy a new printer for the cost of both inc cartriges. Purchased Imigen refill inks. Printed thousands of copys and threw away the printer recently [after 3yrs] with the origial cartriges still in it. Canon S630 is my new and the ink level can be seen.

Both of the inkjet printers I have had contained in the software a cleaning feature. Check for that program. I have had great success refilling the black cartridges. Costs about 1/10 the cost of new. When I want to print out some of the great suggestions on forums such as this, I click on "properties' and choose "black" or "grayscale" depending on the brand of printer. It prints everything like a black & white TV, saving lots of cost and it prints much faster, too. Someone told me that Epson now has chip in their cartridges and it will not work after refilling. They Gotcha!!!

A friend of mine is on her second Epson inkjet printer.Due to the nature of her work both were relatively pricey models(300 to 400 dollar range). The first one gave her problems to the point she returned it to Epson who then sent her a refurb unit.I remember this printer ,typical of Epson, had the printhead built into the machine not on the cartridge like HP printers do.I think a faulty printhead that no amount of cleaning would help was the reason for the return. The more recent Epson she acquired had a problem also and she removed the ink cartridge trying to fix the problem. She said that the printer wouldn't work after reinstalling the cartridge and that she had to put a new cartridge in.She was more than a little pi**ed about having a useless almost full 30 dollar cartridge.Apparently Epson has the unit programmed not to accept the old cartridge if reinstalled.Don't know for sure but that's what it looks like.Kind of ironic that she had great success with a little cheap(at the time) Canon bubblejet that had the heck used out of it for a period of years. That became her daughter's printer which was finally replaced with a much faster, inexpensive, Lexmark Z53 which is doing just fine.Maybe the best printer is a cheaper printer as long as it's not an Epson. In the IT department where I work we have an HP certified repair guy who does all of our printer work. He really hates the Epson products because they have more than double the parts of the HP's yet aren't as reliable, and as mentioned the print head is not user-replacable like on the HP's.

Don't use alcohol to clean the HP print heads. The ink is water soluble, so a Qtip or Kleenex and water is all you need to use.
