Cracked Lip on loader bucket, build-up questions

My IH 500C has a crack through the lip on the bucket edge, if I V-grind it out (from the bottom), would 7018 be good to repair it? The edge is also worn between the teeth, what rod would I use to build up and then hardface. Do I grind it to the correct shape after build up prior to hard face. I have a century AC/DC stick welder and am new to this welding stuff with a few projects under my belt. Thanks for your sage advice.

Hi Rick,

I would clean the area to be welded with a grinder, then stress relieve heating with a torch to a dull red letting the metal air cool(heat zone should be 2" on either side of the crack), then drill a 1/4" hole at the end of the crack if possible or alittle more than where the carck ends, then v-grove 2/3 the thickness of base metal 2" beyond where the crack ends, then weld with 7018, then shape and fill with 7018, then cover with Lincolon Wearshield 60.

The Lincolon Wearshield 60 has a two layer maxmium build up. You get longer wear of the repaired face if you run one layer one way then run another layer 90 degrees to the bottom layer.

T-Bone,

Thanks, I figured you'd know just what to do. The build up area along the bucket edge will need more than two passes, could I build up with 6011? The problem I have is the edge being bevelled is worn in a shallow "U" between the bucket teeth so the edge will have to be built up some before hardfacing.

Hi Rick,

You can use the 7018 for build-up as it has unlimited passes.

It's the hardface rod that has a two pass limitation. All hardface electrodes have there own quirks(restrictions) so be sure a read the lable on whatever you use.
