I purchased a 10 inch bench grinder Saturday at an auction . It has a l HP , 1750 RPM, 3 phase made by Snap-On. How would this grinder run an ENCO static phase conventor. I know it will have less power but is it going to be slow and Hum alot. Even though I don"t have 3 phase I couldn"t resist this big heavy grinder with about 20 extra grinding wheels for $30.00 Thanks, for any advise.

Robert,

if you don't want to build one, a co in florida builds one that is good for anything up

for more hp . i have 3 units in parallel to run

mill, bridge cranes, large horiz press. have been using that set up for 25 years, it works.

one lathe has 7 1/2 hp, one has 5 hp,little

one is 1 hp, boring mill is 7 1/2 hp,cylindrical

grinder has 5 hp + all the little motors on it

spindle, hyd pump, coolant pump.

My experience with static convertors is that the old motors did allright but that newer motors ran very hot. Do yourself a favor and run a search here for info on how to build a rotary phase convertor. $25 should be the most it'll cost you and it's incredibly simple to do. I use a 5hp dummy motor and never bothered with anything to get it started other than a chain gear on the shaft so I had traction when giving it a kick.

If you've seen "slow and Hum alot" you've seen a motor using too much current and getting hot, not unusual for static convertors. Make your own best guess about life span. I've been running a rotary for 20 years. No problem, and cheap.

Yes it will run on a phase converter, There is some new electronic technology converters that will allow you to obtain your full 1 hp. but may also cost an arm and a leg, do a search on "3 phase converters"
