I am thinking about buying an electronic stud finder. I've never used one. Any opinions as to whether they work well, recommendations as to type or brand?

Insulation can thoroughly defeat them. I had my house insulated with blown in foam. Now, the stud finder cannot find anything. Wasn't a problem I anticipated.

I have the basic and the supposedly better 5.5 and neither have been consistent, but better than nothing.

I've used mine on 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch drywall and doubled 5/8 inch at work, with good results. I've also used it thru 5/8 inch with 5/16 T&G wainscoting and thru 1/2 plywood with good results. It's one of those basic "homeowner" versions, think it cost about 12 bucks at Home Depot when I got it 10 years ago.

I have one that Radio Shack used to stock - works fairly well. Usually also check my findings with a magnetic stud finder, and try to locate nails in the wall too.

I bought the cheapest one that Home Depot sells. I forgot what it cost but less than $20. It works quite well on standard drywall. More expensive ones are supposed to have deeper penetration.

My experience has been that they are unreliable on insulated walls when there is foil backing. I had better luck finding one stud and measuring from there. That assumes a wall built to code,of course. The finder works well if the insulation is faced with Kraft paper.

I agree with Pete on this one, I install cabinets for a living, don't spend more that 15 bucks on one and keep a fresh battery in it.
