I have a 75 x 75 foot garden fence and the deer herd is walking right over and through it. It has field fence wire and chicken wire sandwich with four strings of barbed wire above that, it's 8 foot to top using T posts. I have tried all the scents/lights/flashers/dog hair/etc and cannot sleep with a dog barking. While I do get some satisfaction for having fed the herd so well, we are not happy with veggies from the store. I am looking for a reliable, effective electric fence. I have 110v and 220v near by. I am willing to spend a little extra to get one that uses less electricity and is reliable. I need good brand names and any ideas on layout etc.
Sure would like some real veggies this year. I hope this isn't too off tractor topic. Thanks a lot.

Afet 30+ years of this problem, I put the wireless electric dog fence around the garen and dog house. Presto, dog does not bark and deer stay away. Dogs are easier to train to stay infence area too.

Thanks very much for all the adeas. I live on the edge of town (ag/residential) so these deer are used to people and their tricks. In the summer there is a herd of deer likes to bed down just on the outside ofmy garden fence, so stepping over for a snack is very tempting after lying there sniffing and druling at my garden. They eat types of plants on my property that they will ignore elsewhere in town.
I'll take the shotgun approach and use all of the advice. Andy, I havn't heard of that wire before, sounds strong. Is that made for electric fencing, so a fence supply would know of it? I am interested in how to securely bond the flashing to the wire. Thanks again.

We have lots of deer on and around my place in the country . The deer were eating my neighbor's garden up , particularly the peas . This is what they did , and I swear it works ! They put up a few posts around their garden and strung a single strand of wire about 3 feet off the ground with white cloth strips every 10 feet or so . They also hung 1 bar of Irish Spring soap on each corner post . Now the wire was just a wire and not hooked up to a fence charger or anything but it kept the deer away . I have seen many deer around their garden but none in it since they strung the wire .

Now I have seen the results myself . My drive goes right beside their fields so I see many deer on my way in . They have apple trees and the deer will eat apples until you get within about 20 feet of them and then they step into the edge of the woods and they will stand there and watch as you drive by . They also have a dog chained within 15-20 feet of the apple trees . The deer have learned that the dog can do them no harm . In my Dad's garden , the deer just wander around . The only thing that they eat is the corn .

Let us know sometime what you wind up doing and if it works .

Good Luck !

I had problems with deer eating the corn in my garden and I solved it by dusting the corn occaisionally with ground dried jalapeno peppers. I also plant hot peppers around the perimeter of the corn. The smell seems to keep them from getting near the corn. Wish it would work on the bugs!

We own a farm supply store and sell several types of fencers and fencing. Gallagher suggests a slant fence for deer and show a diagram in one of their booklets. Basically it is a 6 or 7 strand electic fence about 7 feet high and equally wide, with the bottom wire being the farthest out. The theory is that deer can jump high and far but not both.I have never tried or seen one so i can't say how effective they are, but they're a lot of work. I would try a regular six foot 4-wire fence first. Zareba/Red Snap'r make a good low impedance fencer. Gallagher is excellent quality but expensive. Any low impedance fencer should work fine but grounding is critical as mentioned in another post.Any good farm supply or fencing retailer should be able to set you up. Good luck!

An orchard down the road has one of these fences. Also still has major deer problems. My problem is the fence sits close to the buried phone line and the phone co. has no idea how to eliminate the noise. Apparently pretty much of a failure all around.

All Interested in Effective deer control !
Here is a different angle on the subject from a 25 year veteran of the fence business. I know the following works as I have installed it for deer control in several local orchards,Botanical Gardens & residences here in SE PA. (seeing herds of 30-40 deer @ one time are not at all uncommon !
First the Concept: I use orange Electric twine (9 strand Stainless) I put the SINGLE strand on fiberglass posts 10-15 feet apart at about 32-36 inches high off of the ground. I then Install PEANUT BUTTER bait holders made out of flashing (This is 1/2 of what makes this work) The flashing is simply a roof over the peanut butter to keep it from washing away. We also have a good method of making a good electric connection between the flashing & the electric twine. This is hard to explain with words but I can take a picture and send to anyone interested.I then attach the twine to a Fence charger. Not just any fence charger will do!! In smaller settings I use a Parker McCroy Mark 6 or better. In the larger settings I use the most powerful fence charger Gallagher or Speedrite make ! (Solar chargers are generally not powerfull enough) We then drive 2-3 8 ft. ground rods for the ground side of the fence charger. (IF YOU DONT HAVE A GOOD GROUND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO UTILIZE THE POWER OF YOUR CHARGER)When the fence is properly installed the aroma of the peanut butter actualy attracts the deer to the fence (they can smell it at quite a distance)as they approach the fence they will try to lick the peanut butter off of the holder and also lick the aluminum flashing ! POW !!! right from the tip of the toung to the.... In the future their association with the smell of peanut butter will be a very NEGATIVE one and they will stay clear of the smell. In the training process the deer may bolt forward and tear the fence down but this is temporary as they dont try again very soon.IMPORTANT: The fence MUST remain baited (replinish once per month)as there will always be one of the herd who forgot or didnt get it yet ! We have built about every kind of design out there and this is by far the most effective. As an added bonus it is relativly inexpensive. Hope this helps !

find a high tensile fencing booklet (at fence suppliers store) it has a drawing and dimensions for a deer fence. if i remember correctly, its not a verticle post like most fences, but leans towards the crop. i have never tried it but you might want too research it.

Lots of good ideas from everyone. I Esp. like Andy's Peanut butter - OUCH!

Margo supplies (Canada) makes some great wildlife protective fencing (esp. against BIG bears, but deer too). Anyway, check them out and email their customer service Dept. I'll bet they will give you some more great ideas.

They offer a wide range of "problem solvers" for wildlife including buzz bombs, etc.
