OK, I know this is kind of a strange request, but I need help finding a "limp" version of 16/3 power cable. You see I just installed a C&M 1/2 ton electric hoist and trolley on a 44' I-beam that runs over one of the bays in my workshop. I setup a festoon system so the power cable can travel with the hoist. Problem is I used standard SJO 16/3 cable and it is not draping very well when the hoist is retracted to one end. Seems to me I've run across, at sometime or another, some power cable that is very "limp". Something that would drape nicely when retracted. Any ideas where I might find such a wire? As always, thanks for the help!

Dave

BELDEN makes about any cable you can think of. I know we used a lot of it on fire trucks going up the ladder pullys, etc.

Thanks for the input guys. I did decide to try the flat Festoon Cable. The smallest I could find is 14/4 out of the McMaster Carr catalog. The price wasn't as bad as I expected $.78/ft or $37.00 for 50 ft. Thanks again for the help.

What you need is called "festoon cable" - UL has a spec for it, I don't have the number to my hand. It's usually flat, PVC insulated, with thicker sidewalls and thinner partitions between the individual connectors. It's specially made with thinner individual copper wires laid in a specific direction in each conductor, and all conductors then laid the same way, or the opposite way, or whatver it is, to get it to "drape" right as you describe.

We use a bunch of this in the flexible portions of manlifts, buy it from a local supplier (Terminal Supply Co, I think) who carries it as a regular stock item. It are not cheap!

See if you can't get SJ 16/3 instead of SJO. SJO is the oil-resistant version and has a much thicker, stiffer jacket. Most electrical shops should stock it. It's cheaper than SJO, too.

I once installed one that had a flat cable. It draped very well. I do not remember where it came from.

Good Luck,
Dusty
