I am not sure that this is on the topic of tools- but I do have a need that perhaps some one out there has come up with a solution for. You see My Wife and I have a new Pond, just under 1 acre in size- it was built in late October last year. A few days after it was built it fill up to about 1/2 way due to a big rain. Now it is empty. I assume it is due to seepage (over half of the pond is great red clay but the other half is yellow orange) I need to do something other than spend a lot of money to fix the problem. I have heard about pond liners (VERY PRICY) and sodium bentonite- (between 3 and 5 thousand bucks). Are there any other fixes? can I add hay, or manure? What about a plastic sheet in roles from Tractor Supply Company? Other ponds in the area are all full (including one other on my property) If any one can advise me I would appreciate it.

ok, I have a good suply of cow poo and used sheetrock. I plan to start there. I apreciate you all for the response as I have more time than money I will apply the poo and the rock and then wait for rain. I will post back in a few months with an update-

I dug one a years ago at my last place. It wouldn't hold water for more than a few days. It had clay sides and bottoms. I pumped water in it and after about the 3rd time, I never had another problem. Gues it swelled up and sealed off.

An old man told me once, when your finished digging in clay, wet it down and use the hoe or dozer to slick it up real good and it will never leak unless it runs out of water. Hehe, that sounds like a smart comment, but he meant during drought, if it dries up for long and starts cracking you will have problems again.

Here in South Texas, we find a local mud hauler (from drilling rigs) and have them pump the mud in gel into the ponds bottom. Great for sealing, and great for 3 eyed catfish. Okay, okay, they only have 2 eyes.

Good Luck.

Jason try getting benzonite(sp)at a plumbing supply,in ohio you have to have a contractor get for you,You can seal the area with it, if you know where it is leaking, you can use it with the water in there or not ,which is better.

If you know where the seepage point is, I've used old dry wall sheets to seal leaks. It's a pretty inert product, I believe, Jason. If the area is small enough it may be practical for you. If it doesn't work, till it in or cover it with more clay. Some day we'll have a welding rod for that.{:^)

In sw okla this is common problem most time after a pond fills up 3 or4 times the silt will help seal the pond and some times when a pond is built clay will be stock piled and plate the pond last thing this is common with sandy or gravely soils i would give it a little more time since it is a new pond unless you have more money than time

Take a look at the link. Also, go to www.google.com and search for "farm pond".

If you did not dig yourself,I would have the person that dug it come back and fix it.

One of the things the local ranchers would do to stop a leaking pond where I grew up, was to feed a herd of sheep in the pond bottom.
All the sheep walking in the bottom of the pond would compact the clay. Ever hear of the term sheepfoot roller?
Just another ideal.

Hi Jason, I hate to be negative. My brother had a nice pond built in central Alabama. It leaked from day-one. He looked about everywhere for a cheap solution. He has had the pond for 8 or 10 years. It was full yesterday. It will be empty when the dry season hits. It is an ugly eye-sore in his back yard during the summer months. If you find a solution that works, let me know. My brother would love to be able to fix his without spending a small fortune.
