Choosing a Welder

I am in the market for a new stick/arc welder. I have already decided I want a 220v machine that puts out 200-250 amps of power.

I only need to weld steel, and maybe cast iron. Most welds would be flat or on the side, no overhead. Would an AC unit work fine for me? I really don't want to spend money on DC current if I don't need it.

What brand should I buy. I have looked at the Lincoln 225AC and I noticed it doesn't have infinite control, just certain settings. Anyone have opinions on the Hobart235AC? What about Century? Do they make good welders?

What model would you recomend?

Thank you
Jeff

Lincoln does make the best 220 volt welder. Although it doesn't have the variable amp adjustment, it is a better unit than the Miller or Hobart (which is also a Miller!) Also, the others are right, spend the extra and get the AC/DC welder. It will do a lot more once you learn how to use it.

Miller Dialarc 250

Hi Jeff

My quick 2 cents. Would be to wait and save even if you have to for the AC/DC machine. As you learn more on welding of different type of metals and the different electrodes available. You may one day kick yourself by going with a AC only welder and the narrower selection of electrodes for it.

Once I switched over to the DC side of the welder, I'ld be willing to bet that I would'nt even have to take my shoes off to count the number of times my welder has been on AC in the last thirty years or so.
