Ok, which way should I store my &#$@&^+ greese gun to keep it from airlocking? Top up or top down? Should an air bubble be up or down?

to get rid of air lock-unscrew nozzle pipe or hose from gun. pump until greese comes out without air. replace hose. sometimes helps to turn filler rod to get pusher cup started into cartridge tube

I load my grease guns at least twice a month. I've always had bulk 5 gallon container's because I use so much! I have one small gun which is still hand cartridge loaded. I've never had a problem with airlock's yet(knock on wood (or my head)) If I do,I just go and buy a new gun, hand the old one to my nephew who will lose it in another week anyway.

Grease guns must, by law, be stored in a manner that any grease coming from the hose will land on the handle of the gun. Provisions should also be made so children coming into the shop can operate the handle and cause grease to come from the hose.

From my years of past experience, I just smear grease all over the handle, take a big glob and put it on my pants and dip the flex hose in to the dirt a few times, then I hang it on the wall. Keeps me from cussing down the road aways.

I think the problem is in how you store the cartridges before you put them in the gun, keep them stored vertical till ready to use, then when you put in gun leave top of gun a few threads loose, pump untill grease comes out and tighten top. I usually hang my gun upright on a nail.

I always hang by the T- handle. Never had any air problems. May make no Difference? Also use cartridges.

I hang by the "T" handle also. This prevents the grease from dripping out of the gun when the temperature is high, and allows the grease to settle to the front of the gun. Air is not a problem, to remove any airlock just hold by the barrel and sling the gun in an arc from side to side towards the ground. This will force grease toward the front and the air to the rear. Learned this from Dad, it's a wonder how much smarter he is now; when I was 16 I was smarter than he.

Ray, One of my favorite sayings, though I don't know the exact wording. "When I was 16, I couldn't believe how little my dad knew. When I reached 21, I was amazed at how much he had learned in such a short time". If we be truthful, this applies to all us guys. My Dad was a tough taskmaster and a jack of all trades. When I was a kid, I used to hate it when he made me help him with all his different projects. God, am I grateful now; it is such a pleasure to do things myself using the knowledge I didn't even know I was getting at the time.

when i put new tubes in, i screw the top back open a bit after releasing the push spring from it's retainer on the bottom. this allows it to "burp". don't go too far, or it's a mess to clean up! works for me.

Well If air would move through greese I would say to hang your gun so that the air will rise out the nozzle, but that aint never gonna happen, it's all got to do with how you load the gun, when you change cartridges you want to avoid creating any air pockets, the only way to totally prevent air bindage is to buy bulk greese and use the hand pump type gun loader. but that can be cost prohibitive,so what I have done is to hold the gun upside down and smack the thing on something very hard like the end of a workbench, this causes the greese inside to force out the air. the downside is that if you have a cheep gun it may get damaged, there also should be a screw on the end of the gun for letting the air out, much patience required. Keep at it.
Good luck Jim K

I use cartridges and when installing a new one, I use the pull tab top & get a little scoop of grease out of the follower end of the cartridge with it & make a small mound of grease on the pump end & reinstall the head & start greasin'.
