Couldn't find the right replacement length cable for the parking brake, and installed, is just a tad too long. Are there crimping tools available out there to join a new threaded rod to a braided stainless steel cable? I need to find both the crimping tool and two threaded rods (open at one end for cable insertion).

I appreciate the help everyone. It dawned on me today that sailboat shops use a crimping tool/press when repairing braided stainless steel shrouds in the rigging, able to stand tons of tension. More than I really need, but what the heck, and no rusted connections.

Here in NC. Advance Auto sells them. They are in a package that is red and labled HELP at the top. We call it the help section. They have a lot of little items like the plastic pieces that go beside the head lights for adjustment, window regulators, door lock knobs, door pin bushings. Just little odds and ends that are hard to get at most places. Jonathan

I've seen these gizmo's years ago. They were very common. If my mind serves me OK, they were like a half moon type apparatus.Maybe you should try J.C. Whitney. Seems they got stuff you can't get anywhere else.

I work for a company that makes cable and cable assys. I would recomend that you not try to crimp the ends on yourself unless you know what you are doing. It takes at least a 30 ton hydraulic press to do this , in about that size cable, in the dept. that makes such things. If it isn't right it may pull out when you don't need it to. Find one of those shortners someone else mentioned.

I agree. Crimping and swaging wire rope and cable terminations is not an amateur sport - not if you want it to hold, anyways.

The only exception to that would be the wedge-style connectors made for wire rope by eg Crosby, which are pretty much foolproof and self-tightening. But I don't know if they make them for wire rope this small.

There used to be an adapter (gismo) sold that would shorten cables. I've used them to adjust the emergency brake also, by adding more.

I still have a '62 jeep truck with them on!
