I got a sand blaster!

I found one of those little red pressurized sand blasters at a flee market and got it, the hood, and several new tips for $50.00. It does it's job except for one major problem. The sand is continuously getting stuck in the valve on the bottom of the tank(where the air and sand mix). I took it apart and cleaned it good. It appeared to have compacted in the valve due to moisture, but, after I put it back together and even though the sand was completely dry it immediatly stopped up again! The only way that I can get any use from it is to tap slightly with a hammer on the bottom valve while I'm directing the nozzle at the target. NOT an easy job. And I am using sand listed as "fine" grade. Does anyone else have this problem with this type blaster?

MGB,

Our school purchased a sandblaster similar to the one you are using....What we do to prevent that problem... We have 2 water traps on the line...plus a very long hose as well. Another thing, we re-use the sand at least 40-50 times before we discard it, so we use a screen from a screen window to sift out impurities.....it works amazingly well. We had problems with small pebbles clogging the lines, even the "triple screened" stuff straight from the bag seemed to have some debris in it.... My 2 cents....good luck!

I have the same problem it is moisture in the air once it leaves the tank with the sand it condenses and comes out of vapour into the sand the only solution is an inline air drier or move to AZ

I started out, years ago with the same 'blaster. Bought mine @flea market from a guy who used it 1 time. Now I've got a LINDSEY machine and a diesel compressor. No matter how dry the tank is,no matter how dry the sand is, you MUST have DRY air to sandblast. Get a good water trap in between the air supply and the sandblaster. We use a large upright close to the sandblaster. Another tip, before you hook the air hose to the blaster "blow" it out in case there is moisture in it. I'm not trying to be a "know-it-all" I learned all mine the hard way!!!

MGB, (like the little British cars???) In addition to Rod's suggestion..... . If your tank has two air valves (one a main cut-off and the other a ball valve mounted in-line to the mixing chamber), when you experience a sand clog, QUICKLY cycle the valve to the mixer to the closed side to apply more pressure to the tank. Usually the momentary pressure increase will open the clog. Also, your sand must be completely dry and free from debris. As an after thought: The next time that the tank is empty, examine the interior for moisture clinging from the sides resultant from the tank standing empty for a prolonged period of time. I store my tank completely full and seldom have problems (except for those darn wire wheel 'hairs').

You may be opening that valve all the way...try only opening it part way. Likely trying to feed too much material as the tank is pressurized. As I recall, I use mine with that valve about half-way open to regulate the feed.

I have just purchased a sandblaster like yours only a brandnew one from Harbor Freight Tools. This sandblaster has a water filter that came with it along with a ball valve in front of the filter and one that regulates presure feeding the business end of the hose. I have had no problems with this one, unlike the suction feed sandblaster, the only thing is I have only used it during the winter when the air was dry and there was very little water in the filter when I was finished. And these other people that have said run the sand metering valve half open seem to be right because that is where I have had the best luck and not clogging the valve.
