I have an old WheelHorse with an 8hp Kohler engine. the generator also serves as the starter(when it is working). It doesn't seem to be charging. If I jump start it, it runs fine. New battery only helped until the battery ran down. Someone suggested the regulator, but no one seems to know how to check it. Does anyone here know how? Thanks

Good chance you've got a bad regulator. My experience is regulators on those combination starter/genearator setups often fail after a few seasons of use. (I suspect vibration from the 1 cyl engine gets to 'em...)

If you have DC voltmeter, the regulator is easy to check: Start by making sure the battery is fully charged and all the wiring is connected and in good condition. Connect the voltmeter directly across the battery and note the voltage with the engine shut off. (Should be about 12.2 volts) Now start the engine and run it up to full speed. If the everything is OK the voltmeter reading will increase to 14.0 to 14.5. If the voltage does not increase, replacing the regulator should solve your problem.

Thanks to both of you.
I'll check it this weekend

If the starter works - - your problem is in the regulator. You already stated that the battery will hold a charge and that it works as a starter until the battery runs down.

Your starter working proves out the brushes, armature, field windings, etc, etc. All that's left is the regulator and wiring.

I have a starter generator powering my 11 hp Arona diesel marine engine. I have had the amature rewired and new brushes fitted. The starter wasen't starting. I have now had problems with the starter overheading. There was a shorting problem in the fielding coil that was patched up but the starter-generator still runs very hot. Is this normal.??

By the way - good luck with it. These kind of problems can really run you up a tree. You might go over all the connections and clean them up as you go. An electrical connection can look good and be bad.
