Should eratic shifting be remedied on 2000 Chevy Impala or has there been any recalls on the subject? Should a person get this fixed or should a person not worry about it? Have read that it rarely happens. This list included alot of the 1999 and 2000 GM cars including Buick LeSabre,Chevy Lumina,Olds 88, Pontiac Bonneville with HYdra-matic 4T65-E transaxle and 3.4,3.5,and 3.8 engines. Any comments appreciated.

Low fluid can cause just such a problem . . .

I would check Alldata.com for any recalls, etc. Then I would get a big stick and talk to the dealer. Even a 2000 model with miles, they should give it a "goodwill" repair.

Is there any warranty left on the car? Have you paid a visit to the dealer? It sounds like a problem that definitly needs to be checked out.Could lead to bigger problems down the road. Later,Terry

Ford had a similar problem with thier electronic shift auto transmissions ( yours is electronic shift, lockup clutch also ). After a considerable amount of warranty work the problem was found to be in the fluid. Although it was well within the service interval and didn't need to be changed according to the schedule, it was worn out. The friction modifiers in the fluid were worn out and causing the transmissions not to shift smooth and sometimes the converters to shudder when going into lockup mode. This seemed to everyone to be an electronic problem when it was only the need for a fluid change and flush. It might be worth the time and money to thoroughly flush all the fluid out of your transmission ( not just whats in the pan, but the other 8 quarts or so ) and change the filter. At worst, you will only be a bit ahead on the maintenance schedule and at best it may help. The electronic shift transmissions on todays cars will wear out fluid long before it turns brown like the old automatics. And whatever you do, don't put a transmission fluid additive in it like Trans-Medic, Trans -Go, etc. This will only make the problem worse if the fluid is the problem in an electronic transmision.
