i am looking at an 88 chevy 3/4 ton its got a 350 auto and is blue in color and i was told dont get a 3/4 ton unless it has a 3.55 rear gear or you will get bad gas mileage and i would like to know how to find out the gear ratio. also i would like to know if the newer grill from 94-98 would be a bolt on or would i need the whole front clip.
any help appreciated.

Hey, clime under the truck on the passenger side just in front of the rear wheel. On the passenger side tube of the axle at the front of the tube close to were the cast housing starts if you clean it you will find a letter code. If you will post that code I can tell you everything you need to know. It tells about everything except the color of the truck. The code will look like this TWK-K-324 I can also tell you if it is the same year as your truck and were it was made. All chevy truck rears have this # any salvage yard with a interchange manual can tell you.I have a 92 silverato with 279,000+ tractor pulling miles and I don't care if it gets 5 miles to the gal. I will not change brands. I also have a 82 C-30 rollback I changed to a 6.2 diesel from a 350 gas about 3 years ago. I went from 10 miles to the gal. to 16 miles to the gal. Chevy is the way to go. Your right, there is a stamped code on the right axle tube, but before ya get your shirt and pants all dirty, just find the GM "Code" sticker, every GM car and truck has one, The Chev/GMC trucks put this sticker on/in the glove box, get me all the "G" codes (GU6,GT5,etc.), with these codes I can tell you ratio, locking, ring gear size etc.

hope this helps

later,dave

That will work great as long as the rear has not been changed. Jonathan

But being it's a chevy truck, the rear end never fails !! NOT LOL

Hopefully if the rear end has been changed someone asked what ratio it was and changed it with the same rear. The decal will still tell you what rear end "Should" be in there, wheather it's a semi floating or full floating rear end, ring gear size, posi/locking, etc.

later,dave

JD, I have two Chevy 3/4. The 1981 has a 454, gets about 10-11 mpg. The 95' has a 350, lng bed, ext cab gets around 17-18 mpg. Thats my caddy so to speak. Took along time to find that baby too. I need the lng bed, wouldnt even look at the shortys. I use the 81 for dumps, conc. forms, and when my buddies vech. breaks down. Shoot, they put more miles on her than I do. They know not to push to hard on the gas pedal though. One good thing is they hurry and get their broke trucks fixed cause they can see the gauge move. I just laugh..... You dont buy one one them crits for economy. Anyway I love them Silverado's. Aint done me wrong yet! Take care. Steve

My tractor hauler is 1990 K3500 4x4 with a 454, 3 spd. automatic (4L80E?) and 4.10 gears. My mileage is 11-12 mpg loaded or empty, on the highway about 14-16 mpg. Rig has over 271,000 miles on it and still going. Minor blemishes include cheap paint job from Chevy (hood and roof peeled) and RH rear has a ding from a blown tire while doing 70 down the hiway. Been a good truck and has the a$$ to pass or grunt real hard, especially in 4L in 1st gear. I think the axle code can be found on the data plate inside door on drivers side. Could also look up the VIN#. As to the grille I don't have a clue. I know a '95 is sitting outside waiting on me to put on the '90.

Only real beef I had was from 88 up Chevy changed bed width between wheel wells. Had to sell my slide in camper as 1" to wide but rode fine in my '78 3/4 4x4 Scottsdale.

Forgot to mention, that I also had a 1991 Chevy S-10 Pick up with a 2.5 Liter 4 banger with a 3.73:1 rear final drive, if careful I pulled 30 +/- MPG. My Buddy has a late 80's Chevy with a 3 speed tranny attached to a 4.3 V6 also and I believe he also has a 3.73 final drive also.

Hey, Thats great that you want one of these chevy trucks. They are very dependable, and easy to work on until 96 when the vortec was introduced. FYI there is two versions of the 3/4 ton a 6 lug and 8 lug. There were many light duty 3/4 ton 4 wheel drives produced . The light duty is more like a half ton than a 3/4 ton. The only difference being the amount of springs, and brake system. Axle ratio is not going to make that big of a difference on you unless you make a lot of long interstate trips. The overdrive transmisson will gear it up enough to give you good gas mileage. As for your grille question, the grille will sort of fit with a little engineering, but it really should have the 95- and newer radiator support to fit properly. If you buy a 88 or 89 you will also have to change the head lights for a proper fit on the new style grille, as the 88, and 89s have two headlights per side that are seperate. The 90 and after have two bulbs, but one lens. Happy Truck Hunting Will

We had to do the same thing for dads 4X4 Chev, I think he found an axle code on the data plate inside the drivers door, and thats how he found the proper ratio to match the front end..

tag should be on door or in glove compartment I have a 82 3/4 and it has 3.96 gears i think. it gets 10 to 12 and may drop a mile or so loaded maybe more in wind. My brother in law had newer 1/2 ton with fuel injection and pulling campers he got less than me .sometimes bigger is better Its a better pickup than my 2000 1/2 ton

The option list, glued to the truck, is coded to identify the stuff installed at the factory. The chalk idea works, but the ring gear has the # stamped right on it. You just need to figure the ratio with a calculator...I fergit how to do long division since they made calculators
hope this helps

JDG,
To find the ratio of a rear end,put a chalk mark or visable mark on the drive shaft at say the bottom, and one on the tire, at say the bottom. slowly move the vehicle foreward, (or back which ever is convenient) while observing the driveshaft and the tire. as the tire makes one turn the drive shaft will make say 3.0 then it would be a 3:00 to 1 ratio. If it made 3-1/2 turns it would be a 3:50 to 1 ratio or 3 3/4 turns it would be a 3.75 to 1 ratio, etc. works every time just don't get run over HA! (It helps if YOU are not the driver)

The rear end should have a metal tag on it usually attached to the cover this will tell you the ratio otherwise pull the cover and count the teeth on the ring gear. No I dont think the later grill is even close to fitting the 88

I would definetly check first before switching.
88'-98 was its own generation, and I do beleive most stuff is interchangeable. Why do you wanna change it?

I own a 1995 C-1500 with a 4.3V6 wich is 23 MPG. According to the manuals, the standard rear final drive is 3.73:1. My Father owns a 7.3L Ford Dually ands his final drive is the close to the same numerical configeration. He tows a Huge King of the Rpad Goose Neck hitched camper.
