Shopping for 5000W standby generators and looking at a Coleman and Homelite. I know the reputations of the various engines (Honda, Briggs, etc.) but I'm wondering if there are significant differences in the electrical ends of these units. If they are anything like air compressors the differences are probably pretty minor but I thought perhaps somebody on this board might have looked into this. Any thoughts would be appreciated. (PS: I know Homelite's future is up in the air since Deere is out of the picture)

What about Homelite with Deere out of the picture? Are they connected?

Deer bought Homelite from Textron
Textron Bought the original Homelite
Homelite is now for sale by Deer
This all translates to dam few parts available for any original Homelite or Textron-Homelite.
If Deer sells the division there won't be parts for Deer-Homelite from the next owner.

CVopper windings, not aluminum dipped in copper colored varnish
Running speed, should be no more than 1800rpm, twice the engine life, and more rotating mass in the generator makes surge loads easier on the engine.
Brush type machines can be reexcited if residual gives out, brushless can't.
Standby generators should NOT idle, fuel savings will be offset by off frequency damage to loads.
Finally, with the prices I'm seeing on these "whole house generators" why not buy a Kubota 6kw for $under 4 grand, and have a real machine?

You know, If I was gonna buy one today, I believe I'd go for a China Diesel Import out of Jamul, California. Check 'em out at www.hardydiesel.com. I don't own one but it looks as good as any deal I've seen. L8R.....Fred OH
