My son has been given an old compressor (originally gas driven) and a tank. There is no plumbing on the unit and I'm going to give him a big electric motor I've got here for a power source. There is a switch on my compressor here at home that shuts the engine down at a certain high pressure and kicks it in when the pressure gets too low. When I go shopping, where do I go and what is this thing called? Also, how much $$$ can I expect to pay for one of these?

I found a ton of good information in the Grainger web catalog.
If you can find a pump of similar design and displacement, it will even give you a hint as to the motor and pully (sheave) sizes for diffreent HP motors on the same pump.
I got lucky, my garage sale compressor is a pump type that they still sell after 22 years.

You should be able to get a pressure switch for under $50 with the unloader valve. What part of Alberta are you in? If you are near Red Deer, pop in to Berkley Compressors. They will have any type of pressure switch you will need. Princess Auto also stock them.

Check WW Grainger. They have a web site and have everything you will need. You may not want to buy from them, but at least you can get an idea about prices.

you had it right, it's called a pressure switch, but i don't think you want to use one meant for wells. as far as finding one check with a dealer that knows compressors, because you will need a few more things: pressure let-off valve (otherwise there will be back-pressure on the pump, causing the motor to stall at starting), safety pop-off valve (in case your new pressure switch decides not to switch off), to name a couple. have him check the tank, also, for rust or cracks. there was quite a bit of discussion a couple weeks ago about building a compressor. you might want to check it out. i'm sure there are some compressor gurus out here that can tell you what else you need, as well as what size motor and pulleys you will need (and yes, there are correct and INcorrect sizes, but i don't know for sure what they are).

IT'S CALLED A PRESSURE SWITCH WITH AN UNLOADER. I ONLY USE SQUARE D SWITCHES, BECAUSE THEY LAST! YOU WILL ALSO NEED A CHECK VALVE BETWEEN THE PUMP AND TANK. CONNECT THE UNLOADER VALVE ,NOT THE SWITCH , BETWEEN THE CHECK VALVE AND THE PUMP. SOMETIMES THE PUMP HAS A SMALL FITTING FOR THE UNLOADER. CHECK THAT TANK, BEFORE YOU BUILD. MANY WILL RUST OUT ON THE BOTTOM. DON'T NEGLECT INSTALLING THAT SAFTY VALVE!!!!! !!!! GOOD LUCK;MIKE

MIke I can't say the technicial name of the part, I have just referred to as a pressure cutoff switch. I think it is the same part as used for a water pump switch, available from hardware stores.

The pressure switches should be available at the farm stores. The water pressure switches are not the same. They work on the same principle but at much lower pressures. I've noticed the newer air switches are not adjustable. It should have the settings printed on the cover. One word of warning: Be sure the tank is in good condition before you throw any money at this project. An old tank could be rusty inside and still look good on the outside.
