Please help. My father needs information regarding a "converted" 6 volt to a 12 volt system and is experiencing problems with starter not engaging properly. The tractor appears to always stop on two spots on compression. The starter sometimes engages and sometimes not; and therefore, shears metal from the teeth on the fly wheel gear.

Hi Steve,

Take the starter apart and clean in between the pole segments on the communitator. They get bridged with brush carbon and copper thus shorting out and never let the starter reach rpm or will stop the amature altogether. I use a sharp pointed stratch awl to clean them.

Next debur the pinon gear teeth tips as that stops the pinon from engauging the flywheel. As long as the pinon teeth are engauging about 1/2" then the worn gear tips won't be a problem. You'll be able too see past depth engaugement patteren on the pinon gear. Some starters have a adjustment for pinon tooth engaugement via a stop collar.

You might as well buy new brushs and bearings and then it'll be completly rebuilt.

When the 6v solenoid goes bad, reorder a 12v solenoid.
