Cutting Stainless steel

I was wondering if a 14 inch abrasive chop saw would cut stainless steel effectively or am I apt to use up cut off blades very quickly or burn up my friends saw?
Thanks for any advice/input.

Stainless can be problem metal to cut. As to an abrasive cutting operation on SS, follow Mark Kw's post. Stainless does not soak up and dissipate heat as readily as carbon steel. The heat generated during cutting tends to stay in the cut transferring the heat to the cutting tool. That's why you should use slower drill speeds when boring and slow down a band saw's FPS speed when cutting SS.

Hi Jerry,

Although cutting SS it will use blades faster you won't notice it unless you alot of pieces. Nothing special to cutting SS.

I have cut stainless bar stock with an abrasive disk and I don’t remember it wearing the wheel out substantially faster than when cutting cold rolled. I personally like using plasma to cut stainless.

You can get abrasive blades in most any size to fit the saw that are made special for cutting SS. I like the plasma myself but if you ain't got one, kinda hard to use one.

Don't over kill on the feed, let the blade do the cutting and give a couple seconds to cool during the cutting if you're doing thick stock or heavy wall pipe. All you need do is lift the blade from the cut for a couple seconds and let it sping in the free air to cool. This will extend blade life no matter what you are cutting.
