My father passed away some time ago--but going thru some tools in his shop, I found something called "armature growler"--what does it do?

Look here to see how to use your growler.

Hmmm I haven't fooled with one for 25 years or so, but as I recall it's basically a big AC electromagnet that is used to induce a current/voltage in the armature so you can test it for shorts/opens.

When you set the armature in it and turn it on it vibrates around and sounds somewhat like growling.
