Anyone tried the new Fram Sure-Drain System for quick oil changes? I bought one for my pick-up but don't need to change the oil yet so I have not tried it. It looks like a neat system and seems fairly high quality.

The system works very well. It's currently available at Wal_mart and AutoZone and will be available elsewhere shortly. For the price, the product is excellent. I picked up a prototype of the part from a friend when it was first manufactured in November and have changed the oil on both of my cars since then. No leaks. I have heard the whisper about debris getting inside the valve as well, but the chances are extremely slim. The cap on the outside of the valve keeps the important inner workings extremely clean. Give it a try.

The kit consists of a nice looking brass valve that you replace your original oil pan bolt with. The new valve doesn't activiate until you thread on the supplied drain hose. Threading the drain hose on depresses a plunger inside the valve and the oil runs out without one ever touching the hot oil. There is a metal probe inside the brass fitting that is connected to the drain hose that does the trick. Between oil changes they supply an equally high quality brass cover cap to keep the dirt and grit out of the valve. The rubber o-ring that remains on the valve allows you to tighten both the dust cap and drain hose to the valve with only hand pressure (no tools) and evidently keeps the dust cap on while driving in between oil changes. As I mentioned the whole system seems very well made and of good quality. I got mine at Wal-Mart for $12 something. I believe there is four (4) different applications for different oil pan bolts, but everything else is the same.

I was mentioning this find to my brother and he mentioned that replacing the O.E. oil pan bolt with something like a gate valve isn't anything new - but the valves would get dirt in them and wouldn't allow a good drain. I guess that is why the new valve on this Fram system uses a cover cap to keep it clean until you actually use it. The inside diameter of the valve is around a 1/4" so it should provide a good drain. I have not installed mine since I don't need to change my oil yet and it will take one more oil change to get it installed before actually trying it out - but it looks like a nifty idea. Why didn't I think of something like that LOL?

Sounds nifty, but when you change the filter you still have a mess.

I had one from J.C. Whitney on my Chevy S-10 pick up with a 4 cylinder engine, always very happy with it. Regarding changing the filter-- I would wrap a couple old cloth's around, then when it was done draining; I would simply burn what was left in the woood stove to all but eliminate the waste oil. If you put one on a vehicle, just make make certain the fitting's where the oilfilter is attached, is well made as they can leak easily and you wont get a chance to catch the problem quickly.
