thanks for the info. i am not going to use this thing for horses, but tools. the hitch won't be a problem, as mine is class iv (10,000 lbs with torsion bars).it is a whole lot cheaper than an enclosed trailer for the same purpose. now,do these things come standard with brakes?

Most horse trailers come with brakes. Might need to do a little repair if its a used trailer but not too difficult. Remember the sides of a horse trailer arn't designed to carry weight. (no shelves) The floor carries the weight. Also on a used trailer you need to check out the floor. Horse poop rots them out pretty quick. Again not much of a job but you don't want your tools scattered down the freeway.

Most saddle horses, as noted, are in the 1000-1200# weight range. Any good tack store will sell you a "weight tape" which you wrap around the horse to get a better weight measurement. These can be tricky to use (have a vet or farrier show you how) but once you have the knack and the right scale, are surprisingly accurate.

Horse trailers vary considerably in their weight-carrying abilities, especially the more modern "all-in-one"s that have storage for tack, water, feed and even a changing area. A bare-bones two-place trailer might have a rated load capacity of 3000# and a tare of another 3000# (horse trailers are typically built hell-for-stout as far as the frame and running gear goes) for a total GCVW of 6000#. Make sure your hitch is rated to pull that.

If you are not planning to trailer horses (and you don't make that clear) bear in mind that the trailer is built for hauling horses. The trailer is going to be considerably heavier, empty, than a conventional trailer for hauling conventional stuff.

A big horse sometimes may weigh more than a little horse. This is open for debate but believe me I have seen it happen

Hi teadave,
It's not clear from your post what you intend to do with the trailer. Do you intend to trailer horses or use the trailer for something else?
Also, what brand is the trailer? We owned and raised show horses for many years and trailered them all over the U.S. In my opinion, Miley Trailer Co. in Fort Worth made an outstanding trailers. I have seen some brands that were no good. Some had a weak wooden floor under a rubber mat. If you are going to adapt the trailer for another purpose, keep safety and good judgment in mind. Good luck.

The average saddle horse weights in the neighborhood of 1000 - 1200 lbs. In a two horse trailer you would more then likely run into a problem with room for two hourses then excess weight. I've seen horses take a trailer a part because they bumped their head. Also smaller two horse trailers are hard to handle going down the road when the horse gets spooked. Most two horse trailers arn't. If you don't know anything about horses find someone who does to help you find a trailer.
