Brazing Aluminum

I have an aluminum intercooler core that needs end tanks put on it. I have been told by a fellow that performs TIG welding that brazing would never work. The material that I would be joining the tanks to is 1/8" aluminum, and the endtanks are also 1/8" aluminum. The intercooler would need to withstand air pressure surges of about 50psi. Not sure how much "tensile" strength this would extrapolate out too, but I doubt it would exceed 10,000. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi John,

I braze AL all the time on refer condensers and evaporators that has a working pressure of upto 350psi without any problems. That is were talking about a good fit of pieces that need to be soldered. not gaps and such.

Harris makes a great aluminum solder and flux if you don't want to make your own.

Do a search on brazing on this form as I've talked alot about brazing this past month.

I have welded body metal on International Trucks at an assembly plant here in Ontario. Harris has a good flux and most welding supply stores can fix you up with the plain AL rod to weld most pieces with an oxy/acet set up. It does take some practice and the pieces need to be cleaned and then fluxed. A carbonizing flame seems to work best for me. BTW There are some handy dandy brazing/soldering type rods available out there that are suppose to some where around 43,000psi shear strength. Hope this is of some help..
