Generator BS Engine Adjustment Question

I'm not sure which board this belongs on. I have a Homelite generator 4400W with an 8hp B&S engine on it. It seems to be running rich. Gas leaks out the air cleaner if the fuel shut off is not closed and it "coughs" when running under light load. When the load in increased or when the fuel is shut off and it is running on what is left in the lines it purrs. There doesn't seem to be any user friendly adjustment(s) on the carb. I came with no destructions of any kind. Any help would be appreciated.

BTW does anybody know why the discussion board menu page is not working? At least on my 'puter

Thanks in advance for any advice- Dave

Sounds like the float in the carb is stuck, or there's some dirt under the needle on the inlet valve. If you're not comfortable taking the carb off and removing the bowl, you'll have to take it to a small engine mechanic.

The question above, I forgot the following that may be helpful. The engine is B&S 8 hp. It is Model 192412 Type 1116 E1 and Code 988813Y0
I am not sure about the "8" being 8 or 0 with a slash through it.

Sounds like a stuck float to me as well. Sometimes if the engine sits for a long time without running the gas will gum up the carb and it will have to come off and be cleaned. If it got hung from travel or has a small bit of trash then "Sometimes" you can take a screwdriver handle and tap the bottom of the carb and the needle valve will correct itself.
