Where does one go to purchase or order a set of chases for cleaning nuts & bolts?

An auto parts store probobly has them,I think Harbor Freight does too.I have taken a bolt and a die grinder with a cutoff blade if its for inside threads, cut a couple of grooves in the threads of a bolt so the dirt can get out and it works just as good.If you need one for a big bolt, one that the nut is big enough to get a hacksaw blade in,cut 2 or 3 grooves in the nut with a hacksaw blade and it works too.

Don't know where you are located, but here in Alabama, USA, nearly all hardware, tool, and auto supply places have them but they are commonly called tap and die sets. For the larger sizes (over 1/2 inch or 13 mm) or for non-standard sizes and thread pitches you would have to go to an industrial supply company. Lots of them are sold on EBay, some of the new sets not of very good quality. Hope this helps.

Chaser sets are different than thread cutting dies. Chasers reform the threads more than cut new ones. Don't waste your money on cheapie sets; Sears, and other guaranteed tools are great value for the money. I hope I don't stutter too.

If you are only meaning to repair or clean up threads then you would be looking for a re chasing die which is commonly refered to as a die nut in industry. When using die nuts never mount them in a vice, even though they rugged they will crack easily.Suggest holding your bolt in vice.then rechase the thread using a 6 or 12 point wrench not an open end tool to avoid loading the corners of die. Real die nuts will not crush but the really cheap ones will collapse because they have very thin walls .Die nuts will not cut new threads as previously stated.

It's funny how different names are given to objects in different areas of the country. I was a toolmaker for 37 years and have never heard of a "die nut". Like around here the oldtimer farmers refer to a bolt as a "tap", which we both know cuts interior threads. Like my mentor told me years ago during my apprenticeship, a toolmaker never stops learning his trade.
