Well, what are we going to do with the older #20 propane tanks after April 1st? My propane source said he would not fill the 20 pounders with the old style valve after April 1. He said he would replace the valve for $17 and pressure test it for $7 or a total of $24. I can buy a new one for $25 at Home Depot. I really hate to through out two perfectly good tanks. What to do, what to do. Please give me your ideas.

Problem is, the new tanks won't work with your torch outfit because there is nothing to depress the safety valve. If you tell the place that refills the tanks that you are using the tank for a torch, they have to refill it. At least here in SD.

Jerry,

I just got rid of three of my old style tanks. I took them to Home Depot and exchanged them for brand new ones. No questions asked!

But will my gas grill hook up to these new tanks, or do I have to buy a new grill now? Do you know?

Nolan,

Your old grill will hook up fine to the new tanks. The new tanks have a fitting on them that lets it be used for the older style grills or the new style depending on what you have.
No problem! I did it on my 10 year grill!

Thanks! Went trotting down to my Home Depot and did the tank exchange without a hitch. Yippee!

Got home, hooked it up to the grill, only to discover that mice had gnawed through the rubber gas hoses. #*&@!

I had 2 empty tanks and went to swap them out for full tanks. They wanted $29 per tank. I told them they were nuts and had both my tanks filled for $17.00. Another rip off here in N Louisiana.

There are many websites on the internet that will sell you the new valves, although replacing them without the special tool is difficult, but possible to do. Since I replace a few now and then I bought the tool.

I'm with Mac.... since you obviously have to have them refilled to use them,,, just drop by a place with tank exchange,, you leave your old tank and get a full one with the new valve for about 10-12 dollars.... Problem solved.....

If you want to keep the old tank you could convert it into an air tank. I've used them or freon tanks for a portable tire tank.

Tell ya what I did, I took mine to one of those places that sell full tanks for about 15 bucks and the old tanks exchange. Around here those places are plentiful.
