Lots mentioned it depends on how tall you are, true. Others alluded to it depends on what you do on it. In other words, how tall are you, will you be standing, sitting on a stool, sitting in a chair, and how tall are the things you'll be working on, on the bench?

I have a 24" assembly table, invaluable. I assemble furniture on it.

CLEARLY, the only way to go is to have a dozen or so benches, in about 1 1/2 inch increments!

I plan on making mine about 36"-37" tall. Based this on the hieght of the KITCHEN cabinets. Don't use bathroom cabinets as they are generally 32" tall. For my reloading bench I plan to make it 42" so I can sit on a stool and still keep a straight spine.

And just think how nice it would be if that bath sink was 4" higher. A major design flaw for most builders. Having created a LOT of baths, I opened a lot of (happy) eyes. No reason not to consider it similar to a workbench or kitchen.

It depends on how tall you are. And how much small work or big work you do. A lot of my work is done in the vise, which hits me just above the elbows, about 55inch above the floor to the vise, also found out with bifocals I use the taller one more. Having two other benches lower they're great for the heavier/bigger stuff. Just don't put a huge long work bench in. Find that they quickly become a horizontal storage place. Instead of shelves under the bench, have gotten old steel file cabinets, two and three drawer types, slide them under, tight, mouseproof, and filings, and grindings dont' get in and ruin the contents like open shelving storage. john in Ne.

Rick- Try standing up to the bench with your back straight. Fit the bench leg height so's you can put your hands palms down flat on the front part of the bench top. That'll take you a long ways from a sore back because of bending over a low bench top. Good luck, IHank

Can't go wrong with the belt buckle height as F14 said.

My welding bench is about 4" lower as it's more confortable while welding or cutting as it allows for the height of part to be welded or cut. All my other benchs are at belt height.

I make my work bench on wheels. The height all depends on how tall you are. Make it so you can put your hands down flat without bending over. Since putting it on wheels you move it to your project. I have vise and tools all located on this setup.
