I have a 55 cub , 6 volt + gorund system with a distributor. The battery kept running down and I found the voltage regulator was shot. The contacts did not open when the engine was running. I replaced the regulator. The tractor runs good however my amp meter appears to be working in reverse. It charges when the lights are on and the meter charges all the way to the right when the lights are on and the engine is at idle. I would think that it should be read a bit toward discharge when the lights are on.

When the lights are off the meter reads just about in the middle, a tad toward the left of center.

When I installed the new regulator I "polarized" the genertor by running a jumper cable from the
right generator terminal (right as you are facing the tractor looking over the hood)to the batt termnal on the regulator so I don't think that is the problem. I should mention that even with the old regulator the amp meter read charge when the lights were on.

SDoes anyone have any idea what the problem is? Could it be that the amp meter connections are reversed???

Not sure if I understand what you are saying, but if the wire that feeds the light switch/lights is hooked to the battery side of the amp guage instead of the generator side, the amperage required to run the lights will be read as battery charge. This would cause the amp guage to read higher when the amp load of the lights is added. The amp guage should read only the current entering or leaving the battery. To do this, only the battery wire must be connected to one amp guage post. The other amp guage post should have the generator cutout or regulator output(bat) wire and any accessory wire (ign and lights) connected to it.

It sounds entirely possible that the ammeter may be wired backwards. If someone in the past changed to a negative ground they may have reversed the wires at the meter to make it read right. If you have a voltmeter, check the battery voltage with the tractor off and with the tractor running at a fast idle. If the battery voltage is higher when running (7 - 7 1/2 volts), the system is charging. Just swap the ammeter leads.
