Hello all; Is everyone starting to get the spring itch?
Who makes the best log splitter for the 3 point.
I will be attaching it to the 73' Diesel 4000 and I want an external pump for the pto. What brands / features do you like and why?
Thanks in advance;
George in beautiful Biloxi, Mississippi

SuperSplit of Maine. Mechanical splitter better and faster than hydr. Easy to fix but a little pricey.

splitters-
timber wolf- pal a mine has a tw5- good machine- set up with a 4way plus elevator-he sells 1000 cord a year, has support eq+ sawmill. he will rip 3 face cord a hour off that splitter-

my splitter is a hybred also- four things ya want fuel econ, speed, power, ease of use. wedge on the ram?
wheres the elevator fit into this pic?
my favorite power unit comes from old combines- prices free to just above, wack a large pump on the tail, plumb up right- thats the key. the draw back, i forget to put wheels under them- friends family, etc can not barrow- dern thats no good

If you are in NY, the best splitters are built by American woodsplitter in Black River. Wedge is on the ram, and they are bulletproof. Not cheap, but high quality. Made for the homeowner or production. Have rented them out for 15 years, no major problems.

I recomend using the tractor hydraulics. I run a 3 pt splitter with my 3020, run it around 1700 RPMs. I HIGHLY recomend getting the hydralic filter cap that you can plug the return line from the splitter into. Its a good setup, and has the cylinder moves plenty fast when i turn up the speed on the remotes. hope you find something you like...

I am in new york, and I have an American splitter. I agree completely with wdglogg. I have had it for a while, and haven't had any problems with it. I would recomend them to anyone....

Aside from vertical splitters (i.e., those that push down) I have yet to see a "manufactured" splitter with the wedge on the piston. Why do you suppose that is? The wedge on the piston saves alot of work, you don't have to go chasing the log which just fell off the front of the splitter for the second, third, fourth split.

Probably simplicity of design; also, if you split tough, knotty pieces, you're occasionally gonna get the block stuck in (on) the wedge. Usually just take an already split piece and hammer it loose. Wouldn't want to do much of that on the ram end of a cylinder.

Thought about building your own? A few pieces of scrap iron and a hydraulic cylinder and you're in business. Your 4000 should have plenty of capacity unless you've got your mind set on external pump.

I think mtd builds their own, they have the wedge on the ram end and have some blocks so if the piece sould stick it will be pushed of on the return. I have a 33 ton with engine on it I have split 12 full cords of red oak never had one stick and it splits through knots in 24 inch diameter pieces.

nothing stops it

With the John Barnes 11 gpm 2 stage pump and a pressure gage on it, the gage seldom goes over 700 pounds pressure to split any piece of wood.
The same pump in the 16 gpm size would get the cycle so fast that you would have to be an olympian to keep up. I think 14 second cycle is about right... L8R....Fred OH
