I have just purchased a cutting outfit and brought it home. I have heard rumors that the tanks should be left to settle for 24 hours before being used or it will screw up the torch. Is there any truth to this or is it just nonsense? I would hate to ruin my torch.

oneday i was at work and we just got a shippment of cylinders in and a guy i work with was in a hurry to get done so he rolled the oxy tank over then the acetylene then hooked up his torch turned on the acetylene got his sparker and lit it ad then opened the oxygen BOOM alot of acetone got in the line and blew up a 250 cf acetylene tank luckly he was 200 foot away. that could have been prevented if he let the cylinders set four a couple a hours he wasent hurt to bad just some burns on his back and one guy got some shrapnel in his leg.

That only applys to tanks that have been laying down. The acetone will eventually run to one side leaving the acetylene unstable should the acetone be drawn out in sufficient quantity. Acetone in the flare produces a purplish color and leaves an oily residue.

This would only be necessary for acet. I'm not sure 24 hrs would be required though. I would think 3-4 would be adequate.
