I'm building a foot-powered lathe for wood turning. I need a drive spindle 1" or so in diameter, 8 to 10 inches in length, with a #2 Morse Taper. Where I could find one or how could I improvise a spindle that would hold a drive center of some sort?

Wow, I am planning on doing something similar and have been collecting parts. My wood lathe I am building will be powered by a motor though. What I found for the spindle is a Collis rough socket. Part # 60902 Morse taper #2 8 inches long. The diameter is stepped one end 1.25" and the other end is 1". Part # 60903 Morse taper #3 10 inches long. Diameter one end 1.5"; other end 1.375". You can see the Collis catalog at>Link

You can order the roughing sockets from MSC 1-800-645-7270 or Blue Ash Industrial supply 1-800-624-5050.

If you find anything better, please post the information.

Hope this helps.

WW Grainger has Morse taper adapters of about every type. You could check with them to see if there is anything you could make work. They have a website, so you could check on line. Good luck, sound like an interesting project.

Any machine tool outlet has them. If you can't find one go to a machine shop and get a worn out 1 in. drill bit with a #2 mt. and make one.
