If you have an Autozone store in your area, they will "loan" you one. You pay for it but they give you your money back when you return it.

Hi,

I've got an american made internal type. Cost about $100, kinda pricy, but cheaper than the broken arm or cut off finger that T-bone mentioned! I'm ascairt (rug rat vernacular for scared) of the external types. The internal ones won't let the spring shoot out the side like external ones can. If the spring is too small for the internal type, the threaded rod idea like T-bone mentions works great. Standard threaded rod is fine, make SURE you have very substantial washers that cant fold up and let the spring loose though. I use scraps of 1/4 steel plate or thicker.

Hi JJ,
I've used two 1/4" steel plates with a piece of 1/2" allthread that didn't work too bad. Work-in with springs can break a arm really quick tho.

The commerical ones use two half round clamps with hardened allthread. Rent from Napa?
