How do I connect a PTO shaft a Bush Hog to the Shaft on the Tractor?

Hello...

My subject pretty much sums it up, but here it goes.

I just bought a new Bush Hog Squealer Series. The instructions say to connect the PTO shaft, as they call it, securely to the turning thing on my tractor (the turning thing being the shaft on my tractor that turns the shaft on the Bush Hog--as you can tell, i do not know all the terms).

ANYWAY...the problem is, I can't get the PTO shaft that is on the Bush Hog connected securely onto the Tractor. The PTO shaft is adjustable length ways. Does it just require brute force? i.e. just shove it on. There seems to be something stopping it from going on all the way...but I have no clue what to do.

Any help would be great!

Dave , STOP!!! If you are as unfamiliar with tractors and implements as you sound I recommend you get the dealer that sold the equipment to you to come out and show you how to hook up and operate them safely. There is a LOT more than hooking up the PTO that you MUST know before starting out and running those machines!!!! DANGER!!! You and others CAN be KILLED or MAIMED if you do not follow the proper safety and operating methods!!!
THIS IS NOT A TOY!!! NO JOKE!
I am not trying to be the saftey cop here just being a concerned friend from this board that wants you to be careful and enjoy your tractor not have you become a statistic on an Emergency Responce or Coroners report. Be Careful!

I wanted to say the same thing as you did but you put it so much more eloquently that I could. I agree Get some qualified instruction first.

Sounds like you need an adapter as the shaft on your tractor is smaller than the sleeve on the bushhog

That grinding noise you hear is probably why it is called a squealer.

There's a little spring loaded button you have to push on the mower shaft. Try putting some oil like WD40 on both shafts, and make sure they are clean.

I've owned a Squealer for about 8 yrs. Noisiest thing that I own. With your lack of experience, I surely would get someone out there with you to give you some hands on experience on how to operate this thing. This is no 'lawn mower' that you jump on and go crazy. I'm concerned that you might hurt yourself or someone else

Do like BB suggested or some of the new PTO connectors have a spring loaded collar on the front you need to pull back while sliding on to the shaft on the tractor

There is a spring loaded retainer pin that must me depressed before the coupler will slide on the PTO shaft. Once on, the spring will return the pin securing it the PTO shaft so that it cannot come off. You will have to depress the pin again to slide it off.

Good news and bad news BB.

Good thing is that I got it connected as you said. Bad news is, I turned the blades on, and they moved very very slowly. It also made a kind a grinding noise. Whats up with that?

Any thoughts?

When you say you turned the blades on, I assume you mean you engaged the PTO. Is the grinding noise coming from the bush hog or the tractor?
And what is "turning slowly". Do you mean just barely turning? Or turning at what seems to be a slower speed than you would think it should?
