i am looking for a pickup truck and i have come across 2 different trucks both f-150 fords one is an 85 with about 150K on the body and about 75K on the engine it has a 4 speed and is 4x4 (it was replaced in 1997) but is rusted out very bad the other is a 91 ext cab with about 220 thousand on the original engine and drive train it has an automatic and 4x4. the problem is that I dont want to do a complete engine rebuild on the 91 before too long also ive heard of the ford automatics going out with time both are going for $500 so i was wondering what you all think I should do.

I have a 91" f150 two wheel drive with Automatic and have had no drive train problems. It has about 220K miles, Although I did have the trans serviced (oil and filter) before I put it to much hard use, I bought it used from a contractor who installed tile. The Trans shop owner did tell me that Ford had an issue with the dip stick for the AOD not being marked correctly. He did remark the dip stick and add the addtional fluid. The addittional fluid put the level at the right internal height so that the pick up will have fluid while traveling on inclines. I did add a trans cooler, its a Fluidyne rated for 20,000lbs. It hauls my 4000lb camper and tractors on my trailer 2900+4000lbs. A good truck all around.
Good Luck,
George

Get the 91 with the better body. The one with the bad body would be good only for rough use, and may not be reliable for highway use. By the way, where are these trucks? I would have use for the old rusted out 85 model.

I agree with DonB; go with the one that has the good body. As for the auto tranny, the Ford automatics are as good as any provided they've been maintained and treated properly. Dad had 170,000 miles on his '85 F-150 w/automatic before he traded it for a '98 F-150; he put absolutely no tranny repairs into the '85 model from the day he bought it new to the day he traded it.

For $500, buy the better body and put in a used powertrain as needed.
