Poly-V belt, A, or B Belt?

Well, I am still working on building a gas-powered air compressor. The pump I got was run by a poly-V belt, and I am having a hard time finding a pulley for the motor to match it. Should I look for a new flywheel/fan that uses an A or B belt? Or does anyone know where I can find a 3 - 4" pulley with 1" ID for a poly-V belt? Or use a jack-shaft so I can use the old drive pulley? Any help is appreciated.

Bought mine thru Grainger. Used the type with tapered bushing. Select the o.d. you require with correct number of grooves then select bushing with correct i.d. size. Bushing clamps onto shaft when the 3 bolts are tightend drawing bushing into sheave.

Zira, I don't know what with or # of groves you need in a poly sheeve, But automotive alternator pulleys these days are "poly" pulleys and they have some rather larger ones close to 4" and the bore is just under 1" might be worth a look.

Putting a "B" Belt flywheel on your Speedaire pump is asking for trouble. I put a "B" belt on this type of pump once and the crankshaft sheared off in less than a week. It will not take the tension required for a "B" belt. Although, if you have a "B" belt pulley, you should be able to run an "A" belt in it without any trouble. It will just run deeper in the groove.

Zira, I ran into the same problem when attempting this with a Campbell Hausfield pump. I bought the V belt version ("A" belt I believe) flywheel for the pump but never finished the project. If you think it might fit, I'd make you a deal. Andy

Since your pump is already set up for a poly-V drive, I would guess that it would be cheaper for you to get the engine pulley to match rather than the other way around. Check out any industrial power transmission supplier in your local yellow pages. They should be able to set you up with a poly-V pulley in the size, # of Vs and bore that you want. Browning is one notable manufacturer of such drives, including pulleys and belts.
