"Thank you all for your posts." You can't beat the help that is offered on Y.T. I've learned a lot about many different subjects, and that all are willing to take a moment to share their information. I just found out this afternoon that
the truck is a 6 lug instead of 5 lug. The g.v.w.r. rating is 7,200 lbs. The numbers listed
on the outside of both doors is 2500. The biggest surprise was the price. NOT $2,500 AS I POSTED. THE PRICE IS $6,500. The owner had put a For Sale sign in the rear window and it said "93 4x4 2500 w/phone no." He had not listed the price as my wife had thought when she told me about the truck being for sale, but had made reference to the 3/4 ton model. I did ask him over the phone if his asking price was
$2,500 ? and he had said "yes". So that's when I decided to post the question about "any known
problems" on Y.T. It now appears he was not listening to my question about the price, and instead "thought" I had asked him about "is it a 2500" ?? WHICH I HAD NOT. Thank you all for your help. Talk to yall later...

Something is not right here, all K-1500 (K=4X4) had 6 lug wheels ,even the old school GM trucks,it is possible to get a 3/4 ton ext cab short box truck. The only down side that I see is the 5 spd 4x4 trans, these are the weak link to these trucks and are very hard to find.

later,dave

I have a 90 4x4 half ton and have used if for towing wagons and such and have only one problem with it. The motoe went up with about 110000 miles. As it turns out, the oil pump never worked properly, and the oil pressure gage always jumped and moved a lot. Got a good used motor to put in it, and the junk yard recomended changingf the oil pump on it. Now it runs perfect, and the oil pressure does not move all over the place..

Over all these are good trucks..

Hey Chainsaw,

Goto a book store and thumb through a book called "Chevrolet & GMC Light Truck Owners Bible", by Moses Ludel. GREAT book if you're going to own one of these things. He seems to like the '92 and newer Sierra C/K chassis.

Looks like it should be a IFS, which apparantly was well designed. Find out exactly what the nomenclature of the suspension components are (New Process 208 transfer case?) and see what he has to say about it. That'll definitively tell you if the vehicle is capable of 3/4 ton duty. Also, check the GVWR on the dataplate of the truck, that rarly gets faked.

Anyway, also has some GREAT advice on exactly what to look for (with respect to common problems) for these vehicles used.

Have fun, on the surface, looks pretty good.

Boy it is hard to beat a good truck. I have owned quite a few and put them thru their paces. I have a 4x4 1500 and it has 6 lugs. I have a 1991, 2WD, 2500 and it has 6 lugs. All of my one tons have had eight. It is possible to put 3/4 ton springs on any truck regardless of lugs, but remember the truck is only as strong as the axles. The only drawback in the Chevy line is the 700R4 overdrive transmission. They have and I have had problems with it. If the truck has been towed with check it out. I have replaced most if mine with turbo 400's but now they have good upgrade kits to rebuild that 700R4 so it is heavier. If you want more info email me.

Price sounds awful low for that year and mileage. Even if it is 2 wheel drive.

My brother had a '91 GMC shortbed 4x4 1500 w/a 350 and 5-speed. I can't remember the lugs on the wheels, but it was a 3/4 ton. He bought it used, but the leaf springs were stacked. You could put a 1-ton of fertilizer pallet right on the back, and it would sit level, it normallly sat high in the back. He checked w/the dealer regarding some part he needed, and asked about the 1/2-3/4 ton. He said it was special ordered, with the 1/2 ton options w/the 3/4 ton suspension, but since it wasn't a true 3/4, it was labled as a 1500. Hope this helps.

John in Maryland,

That would be known as the "heavy-half" as they are called. A 1/2 ton truck, with 3/4 ton suspension.

thanks for the info. He rarely used it hauling heavy stuff, but it was nice when he needed too. I as well as he wasn't sure exactly of the terminology, just knew it had heavy springs but that was it. thanks!

The price sounds cheap, but as far as 3/4 ton, your leg is being pulled. 1/2 ton 2wd, 5 lugs; 1/2 ton 4wd 6 lugs; 3/4 ton 2wd and 4wd 8 lugs. Is the decal on lower front of doors missing? 1500=1/2 ton, 2500=3/4 ton. Also look and see if it has a front differential. You are looking at a 1/2 ton 2wd -- I don't think a 3/4 ton came in a stepside.

There are 2 different GVW for those years in a 3/4 ton, 7200 and 8600. 7200 was 6 lug, 8600 8 lug. I had a light duty 3/4 ton. Same basic under and axles as 1/2 ton, different suspension package. 5 lugs is tell tale of 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive. I haven't seen a 5 lug 4 wheel drive Chevy since ????? Doc

I'm no expert on Chevys, but I've been in the tire business for over 25 years, so I've seen my fair share of wheels. It seems to me that Chevy used a 6 bolt wheel on 1/2 tons til 1972. At that time the 2wd got the 5 bolt wheels, but the 4wd kept the 6 bolt. As far as I know the 3/4 ton and 1 ton have always been 8 bolt.

If it is a 3/4 ton it should be a long box and 8 lug bolts. The 3/4 i had was a 87 with long bed and 8 lug bolts. Most 3/4 i have seen have the 8 lugs.

i had a 90 7200 gvw 3/4 ton that had 6 lugs.i know have a 2000 ck2500 (not silverado)that's 8600 gvw and 8 lug.i'm not sure when they stopped, but they did build 2 choices.the way to tell the difference is the heavey 3/4 and 1 tons have a flare molding over the fender where the 1/2 and standard 3/4 tons don't.hope this helps.

IF its 4wd, it should have 6 lug wheels.

You should be able to take the vin # to your local GM dealer, and they can run it through there computer, and tell you whether its 1/2 or 3/4 ton, and a bunch of other stuff.
