This lathe came on Ebay and it appears to be about what I am looking for. So far I have the high bid.
Tell me what you think. Should I go for it or let it slide? Having trouble justifying a lot more money for a smaller/newer lathe. The shipping will be about $850.

850.00 shipping sounds awfull high, I would check with some frieght companys. Roadway, CF, yellow are some good frieght company's. Check with some local business they might have discounts with other freight companys.

Looks good but, does it come with a four jaw chuck, a face plate, a steady rest, a follower rest, the back gears to do metric threading. The spindle thru hole is small for this size machine and the tail stock taper is small for this size machine. I am not trying to pee on your wheatties but these are thing that you need, you can get away with the spindle hole and tail stock but, the rest can add up $ if you have to buy them seperatly. Neal

Neal is right, getting this lathe without acessories will cost as much as you are going to pay for the lathe. An Older Southbend might not look as pretty but you will get more for the money. I've acted on impulse and regretted it later. Take your time. Jake

I understand and appreciate your comments. If you know of a better lathe for about the same money I am listening. I need all the input I can get. My budget is $2500 for a lathe and shipping.
I want a Clausing gear head but I might as well want the moon. I'll get as close buying it as I will a Clausing.
Thanks.

I've seen 9" and light 10" South Bends on eBay with 600-1250 Buy It Nows for weeks. Most were newer than the leather belt era.

How big do you want?

I've been following your lathe shopping and learning alot of stuff. It takes me about 5 minutes of intense, concentrated effort to type in an ebay URL, but I've never been able to make one work. Always "Publisher refuses to give you access." I'm doing something wrong and tonight I'm officially giving up. Never again. In case you're interested, you can type the URL in the "Optional Link URL:" box, which is just below the "Comments:" box. Then, enter something (anything, actually) in the "Link Title:" box, like "lathe," for example. "lathe" will appear in your post, and readers only have to click "lathe."

Bewildered, I was like you with the typing address problems until I learned to copy and paste. If the poster typed in the right stuff, the copy and paste will work every time.

Searching eBay is a snap. If the item # is known, click search, box appears w/ seller, item # etc. For tractor items click buisness and equipment. The box appears [search business and eqpt], this will take you into anything mechanical just for inst Oliver. By clicking the lower box a search for anything is available
