I remember awhile back on this forum there was a discussion about phase converters and how to build one. The person who had plans was "ltf in nc" Would it be possible for someone to point me to those plans? Thank you, Dave

Dave I ran a shop from a very simple converter. It consisted of a 15hp 3 phase motor and a 1/2 hp single phase motor I wrapped a belt between the 2 shafts with the single phase motor on a hinged base (so i could loosen and remove the belt when the 3 phase motor got going)I would jump start the 3phase motor (get it turning) with the little 1/2 hp then hit the 3ph with power it will run on single phase once up to rpm and create the 3rd leg to run your machines. I did this for years without a ketch. Greg

The folks at Village Press, who publish Homeshop Machinist, Projects in Metal, etc Just recently published a book by Steve Acker and edited by Joe Rice which has a nice Phase converter plan in it. I got the help of a electrician friend and built one. Using it in my shop. Like it. You'll need a 3 PH motor of at least 2X the horsepower of the largest motor you want to drive. Was able to scrounge up the relays, wire, etc. Most expensive thing I had to buy was the "momentary on" start button and a capacitor. Guess it cost me about 50 - 60 bucks to get her going.

Their toll free # is 1-800-447-76-367.

The search function on this site works very well. If you enter "phase converter" you'll get all the old posts, links included.
