I was wondering if anyone would happen to have a set of plans for an engine hoist or "cherry picker" as they are commonly called. I'm an FFA advisor and we're getting ready to put about 3 motors back into tractors and a hoist would make it much easier. If you have plans and would be willing to share, I would greatly appreciate it. I've found plans on the internet for sale that would cost me about 20.00 after shipping. Money is tight in our school....Thanks for any help you can provide.

Mr. J -
I have some plans in welding book at home. I will need to scan them in and fwd. them. How about by 2/8/01? I will pass along to others that may be interested in building their own.

Personally, I bought one a factory built one but am trying to figure out some form of swinging hoist for my new shop.

Unless you just want to make one becauce you want to and to prove that you can do it, I think you would be better off just buying one. If you have to buy the hyd cyl or "long/hi-lift jack" and any or most of the raw material, making one might actually cost considerably more. Some nice ones (with folding or detachable legs for easy and reduced storage space) are available. Try "Big Lots", "Advance Auto", "Auto Zone", "Auto Works", "TSC" & etc. especially when they are on sale. Look at a "bunch" of them before you buy one to be sure that you get one that you like. My brother in law got a nice one with folding legs and handles (makes it easier to move it and store it) on sale for $159 -10% with some kind of coupon deal, plus sales tax. I like his a lot better than mine which I paid $240 for years ago. Good luck with whatever you decide.
