We "Used to" buy lawson, didnt take long to see why the salesman drove a mercedes..Karr a little high also. Ace or local TSCo could probably give you some good leads on sellers also. Quantities there are reasonably priced. But like everything else anymore, watch the quality. You get what you pay for..

I sold nuts and bolts for years and know that there is big profit in them. Lawson is probably one of the highest price ones you can buy. They will lots of times give you a bolt bin if you buy from them, but you will pay for them quickly. Karr products also sell fasteners and once again you pay for them. There is another company that I have boughten from called Fastenal, there web site is www.fastenal.com. They have stores all over the USA. They pertty much sell what I call a Candian made fastener, they have a triangle marking on the head. They are called INFASCO (something like that). Some american made bolts are Newcor(n) Lake Erie (LE), Highland(forgot there marking). I have other bolt information yet at work on different companys. Also makes a difference if you want plated, black plain, or gold plated. Something also to remember is that lots of times the price can be dickered with depending on what your buying. It also amazes me how farmes like to buy them by the lb vs the 100 price. Another thing is that someone figures that the harder the better which is not always the case, grade five bolts will give (stretch) where a grade eight will snap, so each one has their place to be used. I still sell a few fasteners but not like I used to (went to work for different company). While back yt had a article on fasteners. Also remember lot of the people out selling on the road work on commision so the higher they sell them for the bigger their commision check is. I could go on and on but I would probably bore everyone to death. Guess one more thing on Lawson is most of their bolts are a grade 6 and have a taller thicker head on them. Enough said>>>

I would shop around, those guys that bring the bolts to you usually rip you off sooner or later, and if you work on stuff that goes down the Interstate I think there are even laws about the grade of bolts you are supposed to use.I think on cars and some applications on trucks it has to be grade 5,and on some stuff its grade 8.Might be worth considering.Where I live here in Missouri there is an Orschlens store which is kind of like a Tractor Supply. They sell bolts by the pound and I dont know where you can get them cheaper. You just have to watch the grade, because if you use grade 2,you are wasteing your time.It will fall apart just sitting there. They are marked on the head,I believe 3 marks is a grade 5.Lawson makes good stuff, but they are high priced, and I have found that about all they are is convienient.Their stuff is maybe better than some, but not so much that it justifies their price, and likely they get their stuff from the same place as the hardware store.Thats likely the best you can find if you can find an old hardware store some place and buy what you need from them.Just my opinion.

You need to be careful anymore when buying bolts
that you are not buying a Jap bolt. The way to tell the difference is an american made bolt will
have the manufacturers trade mark stamped in the
head of the bolt. A grade five bolt will have three hash marks stamped in the head of the bolt
as will the jap bolt but the american made bolt
will have the trademark stamped there also. A grade five jap is truely about a grade three in
american standards. The quality isn't there. I'd rather pay a little more for the american bolt
and have the quality.

Hi Greaseman,

If you were going to buy $200 or more I would let Copper State Nut & Bolt bid on it. If your buying common quanitys there prices may supprise you and there usually not of low quality steel like most of the pay by pound. If you don't care about the quality then try flee market type/ second hand tool places as I always run into someone selling by the pound. also Harbor Freight and Northern Tools carry them.

We looked into having Lawsone supplies (check the link) stock our bolt bins but when we started comparing cost it turned out to be rather expensive. I think we are just going to go bolt shopping once a month to stay stocked intead.

about delivery, but when I hit my local Ace hardware, I usually buy in box lots. Depending on size, N/B/W come 50 or 100 to the box. I keep an assortment of lengths from 3/4 to 3-1/2 in 1/4 through 1/2 bolts with nuts, flat washers and lockwashers for each size. A couple of times a year, I eyeball the bins, and top off the ones that are getting low.

Lot cheaper by the box than by the each, too.

greaseman, if you know someone who works at a large hosipal, nursing home,or other large bussines that has an inhouse mantaintance shop, check with them and find out who supplies them with their bolts, i have know in my area that we have people who furrinsh the bins and will set up a secludle to restock it for you. i have found that the price runs up to 25-30 percent less.
