Well I bought the old Speedaire compressor, the motor was dead but the price was right. The pump seems to work well & I have pressure tested the tank, but how do I tell if the manifold is any good? There is a screw on the side that doesn't seem to do anything. Do I just try to use it, or is there a way to test it, or do I just replace it? Ditto the Square D controller of the motor - any way to check it out? I am planning to switch this over to a gas motor so I don't need the controller but if it is good I will save it as a backup to my other compressor. Any help appreciated.

Hi Zira,

What you might do with the Sq D control is use it for the high pressure relief as well wire it to ground to shut the gas engine off when it gets to set pressure. Most of them also have a unloader that would help start the gas engine as well.
It should have a pull ring on the saftey high pressure and just pull it to make sure it has working free movement. The differential pressure setting can be checked by running the compressor and comparring the cut on pressure with the cutt off pressure.

It is a single stage, 2-cylinder, on a 30 gallon tank. Had 2 (real) 2-hp motor originally.

5 hp gas would run this size air pump. however base might not withstand load of gas engine. atmospheric unloader would work fine on this , because it most likely doesn't have head unloaders, and would be eaier to set up. i think grainger has one that will also control engine speed in one unit, but you will need to hook up air cyclinder on engine govenor. you will have to get one set for around 100-120 preasure.

have had 2 speedaire compressors with 5 hp motors one unloaded to the atmoshpere with unloader when reached set pressure it popped and vented to atmosphere...the other unloaded the intake valves on compressor..engine speed stayed same on each...have 1 2-stage that i have rigged up and i put unloader on valves and engine..has 11hp on it..my company replaced 4 2stage speed air pumps and i took 4 and built 2 out of them..have one on 5 hp electric motor and other with gas engine carry on my truck have used tank on gas compressor and pipe tank on electric..
