Gopher Control

I am about to begin another gopher control campaign this spring. The coyotes picked off about half of my cat herd this fall and things are getting out of hand in the pasture.

I have a good collection of the of the old style spring traps but have heard that the 'black hole of death' trap works better.

Also was wondering about using the 'thumpers' or sonic devices for small-scale control around the garden. Snake oil or do they work ?

Any thoughts or advice from vetrans of the gopher wars is appreciated.

DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!!!This is just fer us perfessionals. Fill the hole(s) with water; this may take a while. When they're completely full, pour a few gallons of gasoline in; it will float on the water; back off a ways (a long ways) and touch it off. Ground may raise up a few feet, but it'll eventually settle back down.

I've had a lot of success using simple vehicle exhaust. I purchased an adapter tht fits around the tailpipe of your truck or muffler of your tractor, and a garden hose screws onto it...stick the contraption on your vehicle, attach the hose, put the end 6" or so into your gopher hole, and listen to your favorite radio station for 10 minutes or so while you're idling...gophers love the smell, but only for a short while...bingo - self buried gopher...

Some of the southern boys will know about this. When I was somewhat younger, there wasn't fishbait stores on every corner and we had to get our own bait. We went out in the lowlands and drove a stake into the ground. Then we took an axe or flat piece of metal and rubbed it across the top of the stake. The vibrations made the worms crawl out of the ground. I guess vibrations work on gophers as well as worms.

Well, if you spot one going down a hole, you can use the time honord method we've used around here for a couple generations. Place a muskrat trap upside down over the hole (one that looks like a scaled down bear trap - with out the teeth). Then pour a 5 gallon bucket of water down the hole. Critter usually surfaces before you're done pouring. He's so busy trying not to drown, that he misses the reality of the trap. SNAP!

try using crystal drain'o.

They crawl over it (in the hole), like their
paws, and die..

I have both critters, gophers and them ground squirrels. Iv been using them gas bombs. It thins them out, but only for alittle while. You have to stay on top of'em. Was at a ag fair last week. Saw a video on that propane and X-gas. Look pretty convincing, (fun too!!!!!). Got a fellas card-$50.00 hr. Gotta see if the neighbor's are interested. Until then...Where did I put my lighter????? c-ya steve

Gotta a Gopher, how do I get rid of it? I've tried flooding the little bugger out and all he does is move. I've heard that shoving a flare down the hole will smoke him out but I don't need to torch my backyard. Any suggestions would help, no traps, got kids, are gopher bombs still available and where can you can them?

How about a 30 06 sighted in with a good scope and some acclerator loads, the ones using the sabot's? I hear rich dr.s and lawyers will come from the city just to have something to shoot at.

I've always been partial to the ramp up to a 5 Gallon bucket full of water. Spring drop mesh and all the critters go for a swim... for awhile!

We had a BIG gopher/mole problem in our yard . Mounds every couple feet. Railroad flares down the new holes worked Ok and was kinda fun. M-80's were fun and worked too. BUT the darn things would come back. Their relatives moved in after the funeral I guess. What DID work and has worked for the last three YEARS is one of those windmills that vibrate! Got it out of the back of a seed catalog. A blade about a foot across with a tail and a piece of pipe pounded in the ground to mount it on. Has ball bearing in it that rattles when the blade spins.Just spins in the wind. I hear you saying "Yea Right" just like I did when I put it up. Darn thing works!!! Best $15 I ever spent on mole control( well maybe the flares and M-80's)But they have never come back! Email me if you want the name of the Mfg. and I will run out in the yard and look.

Thanks.. Sounds like you had good luck with it on Moles, I wonder if Gophers wouldn't like it either.

Seems like I read a post a long while back where somebody claimed to have seen his gophers doing some sort of cha-cha to the beat of the vibrator.

They way they have some of the pasture infested I'b better get the cows clear before touching anything like that off.

I'd likely have the FBI, BATF and the National Guard, showing up too.

but.. that or the tractor exhaust down the hole don't sound all that bad.

Rent a copy of "Caddyshack" (a movie for those not so fortunate to have watched it the zillion plus times I have), and do what Bill Murray does!

uh, again, sorry...HAD to say it!

Hi bbott,
Some time ago, someone posted concerning windmills. He said that he wanted one to keep the moles out of his yard. This was new to me so I asked if the vibrations of the mill turning was the reason the moles departed. I never got an answer and would like to know about the sonic devices that you refer to. Thanks.

Yeah, Northern tool has a windmill driven gopher 'vibrator'.. then there are battery powered, solar powered, 110 volt powered.

I just wondered if they worked at all. I know that periodic rototilling around the garden seems to discourage them. One of the neighbors said it was the vibrations made by the tiller.

BTW I have 80 acres of some of the best gopher-producing country in the USA.

Too bad they aren't used for fur coats.. I'd be a millionaire.

In the spring and at midsummer I spread Dursban on the yard. It kills the things that gophers and moles eat, therefore no gophers and moles. My nieghbor gets mad because they all go to his yard. A couple of beers and he gets over it.

Here in New Mexico we have a gopher problem. I went to the farm store for a good remedy. They sold me traps and poison. They smiled and said "Good Luck".
The only way I sent the gophers away was a flexible exhaust pipe on my Ford 4000 gas tractor.
Attach one end on the tractor exhaust pipe, put the other end in a gopher hole, and rev up the engine with the choke part way on. After 30 minutes moving from hole to hole, the gophers never returned. "Good Luck"
