For $199, the JD CS36 is almost a better quality saw than the $179 Husqvarna 136. The Deere has inertia chain break and a saftey tip. Home Depot sells a CS36 cheap P.O.S. look alike for $179- don't fall for it. depends what you use saw for: medium trees-CS56 good/CS36 good for limbing and pruningi run business w/ all deere equipment-8 total-can't go wrong w/ 'em! good luck and don't forget hearing protectors, eyewear, and hardhat.

Having made my living cutting logs for various
helicopter logging companies for many years, I
have been around several brands of production saws. There is a big difference in production
saws and house hold or occasional use saws. It is
my opinion that there are only three saws on the market worth buying. Those being stihl, husky,
and jonsered. Jonsered is made by husky, same
internal parts, just a different name. When husky
builds a new saw they put it on the market as a
jonny red to test it's reliability before they build it as a husky. Other than the outer tin ware
or as it is now, plastic ware, the two saws are
identical. I run husky for a number of years and had no complaints. About ten years ago stihl came
out with the 066 so I bought one to try. I have used stihl ever since. Not that they are superior
to the husky, but lighter in weight to a comparable husky, and It is my opinion that they
have a little less viabration. There is no difference in the reliability of two saws.

I don't make a living with a chainsaw but I use one regularly and my choice is Husqvarna. I have owned Stihl and other brands I am ashamed to admit to but Husqy is my pick. I have had a Husq 44 rancher for 12 years and it runs as good today as it did new. My $.02

You may also want to check out www.forestryforum.com. They have alot of pros over there that are SERIOUSLY into saws.

I run a Stihl 034 (firewood), Poulan Wild Thing (limbing/general brush saw) and a David Bradley w/ 36" bar (felling). The DB is an OLD saw and built like a tank - doesn't get much use.

I bought the Stihl and DB used at auctions, the Poulan was gift from the wife after seeing me cuss, cuss, cuss the DB for nearly a yr. My favorite is the Stihl - lots of power but it likes the gas.

Stihl and Husqvarna are the top brands. You just need to know which ones to avoid. Most odd-numbered Stihl saws are not worthy of the brand, and the 029 is a boat anchor. The cheaper Huskys are just orange Poulans.

Other saws you might want to look into are Makita and the newest John Deers. The Makitas used to be Sachs-Dolmar and the JDs were Olympik or Oleo-Mac. Both the same quality as most brands S or H, but are cheaper.

Stihl is tops. I have repaired all brands for 20 years. The pros around here use them 10 to 1. We have a pro line and a consumer line. Pro line for wood production, Consumer line for 20 cord or less a year. The 029 is working out very nicely for the price. I use an 034 for 10 years now. When the other brands come around, mine is always the last one to be shut off for the day. No down time.

I had a Homelite which I traded for a Stihl. Big disappointment. I ran that saw one year and sold it. It lacked power, was hard on gas. Got another Homelite and later added a Husqvarna. The Husqvarna is a real saw. Much better saw than either of the other brands I ran. I wouldn't be interested in another Homelite since John Deere bought them. I understand JD has now sold them but while they owned the brand parts were hard to get and outrageously priced. I suppose you can get lots of different opinions and everybody has their own experience with a brand, so I don't think my experience is any better than anybody elses. I think the dealer and the service he can provide is a big factor, probably bigger than the brand name.

"Vintage" Homelites made until the late '80s/early '90s were very solid, if outdated saws. I have some from the early '70s that I wuoldn't trade for anything. The JD saws are crap and they sold the company to Taiwan because sales dropped off.

Stihl or Husky. It,s a toss-up. Go to the nearest dealer. Service is very important.

There is no such thing as a bad chain saw. As long as you keep clean fuel in it and the bar gets oil and the chain is sharp they all perform well. I do work on all of them. Some are easier to get parts for but they are all good saws. Don in Newton ms.

I used to run a full scale tree service in Southern Maine and have used Jonsered saws for years. Have an excellant dealer which is very important to me. I would suggest one of their turbo saws with at least 3.5 cid.Don't forget to buy a pair of chaps and hard hat with eye and ear protection.

Dunno who actually makes JD chainsaws, but I know it ain't JD.

Stihl, Husqvarna, Jonsereds and Echo are the Big Four with the pros here in Eastern Maine.

I'm just a homeowner that burns a little wood, and my Stihl 025 works plenty good for me. I've cut a few 24" trees with it, and would want a longer bar if it did that regularly (16" on it now) but the motor has plenty of power.

The older JD saws were cheap Echos (somewhat crap), the newer ones were Homelite (total crap), and the just-released new models are very high quality Oleo-Mac/Olympik saws. I wouldn't hesitate to buy the new ones.
