was buying spark plugs for a '91 S-10 with a 4.3 the other day at NAPA. I asked for Champions, because they've always worked great for me, when the guy in line behind me said "You know, you should really run AC plugs in that motor. AC Delco is owned by GM, GM's motors are designed to run on AC plugs." I thought, yeah, that's what they want you to think so you will buy thier stuff. I ignored his advice thinking that as long as the plugs are gapped properly and of the right heat range, they should be just as good as any other quality brand. So, do you guys think that there is any truth to the statement "Engines only run thier best with a certain brand of plugs"?

Plugs are plugs.Like all products sold today. They are not made to last. Marketing tells us that $10.00 plugs are better than $1.58 ones. Manufactures today do test so they can tell when the product will fail. This is not so they can make better products but so they can figure on their next sale. This helps them better balance their checkbook. Manufactures try not to give you a dime more than the dollar fifty eight you paid.

About 10 years ago I made a living as a mechanic, and what I saw then was Champion plugs were worse than the ones I was replaceing.I think Autolite was best in those days.Lately working on my wifes car I got some Autolites at WalMart and they werent any good.Maybe its where you get them, but most stuff is lacking in quality I think.Just because Champion works good in a tractor because nobody else still makes plugs for it doesnt mean they are good.It just means they control the market, and to do that they have to be replaced often,to my way of thinking thats what Champion is,a plug that has to be replaced often, thats what makes them the best selling plug.Delco most likely makes a plug that will last so long in your motor you will forget what plug problems are before you have to change them again.Autolite probobly does too.

Like the others have said, use what works well for you. Don't get yourself locked into buying X simply because of the name.

In the japanese motorcyle world, many do special Champion tuneups. Customer brings in a bike running badly, and new Champion plugs are observed. Replace them with NGK plugs, and the customer is thrilled with how their bike runs.

Opposite direction though is my RX-7 experience, with their "special" NGK wankel plugs. Always had them foul fairly quickly. Accidently had to run a cheap set of Champions once in that engine, the completely wrong type according to the manufacturer. The engine loved it. Go figure.

Over the last 30 years of being in the field of mechanical repair and a lot of it in the field I have had a lot of experiance with champion plugs with most of it being bad, my pick for what it is worth would be autolite.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If one doesn't work and you have eliminated other possible problems try another brand. That is basically what I have found and it sounds like what others are saying here.

I'vr found this discusion interesting but want to add a few things, have worked the past 26 years making spark plugs.I started at AC Spark plug originally, but they have changed the name to Delphi now.AC-Delco is only a name that is owned by GM and they can hire anyone to make there spark plugs and do in many instances. We at Delphi do make many AC-Delco plugs yet about a 1,000,000 a day yet.I have always used AC plugs in my stuff and had good luck but think it makes little difference any more who the maker is.All of the GM cars and trucks coming off the line now days have Platinum Spark plugs made by Delphi for the most part and thes plugs are garenteed for 100,000 miles so if you have troble with plugs in newer vehicules go back to the dealer.I am pretty sure Delphi makes the plugs for Harley Davidson's,we make many parts for them.

Last year my minivan was misfiring and the engine was dying. I actually had to have a tow one of the times. After much head scatching and trying many things by my trusty local neighborhood mechanics, I gave up and took it to the dealer. They poked around with it and told me that my problem was that it needed a tuneup and had the incorrect plugs in it. As the plugs only had about 15,000 on them, I was basically "yeah right". I told them to do the $225.(!) tuneup thinking they were in for it when it acted up again. That was over 12,000 miles ago. If a vehicle recommends an expensive Platinum plug, I say go with it! As for brand names, I have bought many and the only thing I will swear to is that in a 2-cycle older snowmobile engine, the only plug that doesn't foul out immediately is a Champion.

Just a little trivia note. Albert Champion founded the AC company, then after he sold it to GM, he went on to found the Champion company.

Use what works for you, but I have had nothing but problems with Champs. I my applications, the Champs fough out faster than A/C or Autolites, even though the plugs are the same "Heat." I also have noticed that they fuse with Heads and are difficult and sometimes impossible to remove, even though I put anti-seeze on them when they are installed. I have used Autolites in the past and they are a good plug, I just don't think they match A/C's performance.

It seems that years ago Champion made the Best of the Best plug, but now I don't use anything but A/C.

A side note- Champs are a whole lot better than NGK!!!!! !!!!! !!!

PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANTI-SEEZE ON PLUGS !!!!! ! Yes they will seeze up then . Put engine oil on the threads and clean up the threads in the block before putting the plugs in with a thread cleaner (J.C. whitney). Used NGK in my snowmobile's and ATV's , always fouled out , Dont use them any more (sick of walking!).

I agree with Mac. I always put the same type of plug back in as I have taken out unless there is a specific problem with it. Also, did you have problems with the "ABS" (anti Locling brake system) on your truck, paint peeling, headlight switch, door locks, rear brakes going bad? Let me know.

There are only a few manufacturers of spark plugs although they carry many different brand labels. For example, CAT plugs are built by Champion. Yes, each brand plug is normally built to spec by the company that brands them, and fine tuned to do the job they want. To make a long story short, you can see a huge difference in performance and longevity between brands even though the cross reference say they are the same plug. Don't believe me? Use a scope and start checking firing voltages and duration and such from one brand to another and you will be very surprised.

I agree, we have tested numerous plugs, and Champion has always been the champ, well, almost always. We use over 175,000 plugs per year so cost and performance is an issue (industrial applications). Yes, we buy directly from Champion now days and usually buy their plugs much cheaper than any other brand, but it wasn't always like that. Some of our plugs are about $100 each and last 1-1/2 years, non stop, 24 hours per day. If I send a tech out to change a plug that failed early it cost me 55.00 per hour and depending on how far they drive, it can add up quick.

Hey Richard, Just curious. What kind of industrial place uses 175,000 plugs per year? What kind of vehicles and how many? What are the $100 plugs for? Thanks!

We are the largest privately held gas compression company in the US. We have around 1500 natural gas compressors that we rent and perform full service maintenance on (around 2 million horse power total). Our cheapest plug is a little under a buck each and the ones for our large engines cost about 100.00 each (actually our cost is somewhat less $86 or so). They go in the 3500, 3600 series cats, 5000-8400 hp Wartsillas, AT27 Waukeshas (4800hp). The computerized ignition system checks firing voltage and lets you know when plugs need to be serviced, cleaned, and re-gapped. Most plugs are changed on a monthly basis, except for the real expensive ones, they last 3 months to 1-1/2 years depending on the fuel gas, load, and engine.

We have used Champions for about 11 years now without too many problems but Champion has had a few problems in the last couple of years. I'm sure their precious metal industrial plugs aren't an even match to the automotive plugs comparison wise.

We have used a limited supply of AC, Stit, Altronic, and a few others but stay with Champion.

I run NGK in my ATV's, and nothing but Harley plugs in my Harley (probably NGK as well). I run AC plugs in my Chevy's and Autolites in my ford.
Champions I use at work, and sometimes when I stock one that fits my lawnmower or welding machine I'll use it. Mostly, it's preference, but there is a difference when it comes to high horsepower lean burn engines, they "have" to have a flawless ignition system.

Boy oh boy could this start a brand war,BUT I.M.H.O.a lot of times the plugs cost the same per brand and Ford,GM etc. DO a LOT of reasearch/testing with there paticular brand so I always figgered if the cost is the same, why not put Delco in GM, Motorcraft in Ford etc. Over the many years I personally figgered they was all pretty interchangable tho' as per heat range and application
