WI VF4 Timing Question

I am tinkering w/ a WI VF4. It had a dist. on it when I got it. I want to restore it to orig. I purchased/installed a used FM Mag. Engine fires but will not catch. I am unable to adjust timing exactly to the mark as mag will only rotate a very small amount. Best I can do is... Mag snaps on trailing edge of X vane where as it should snap on leading edge (I think). Anyone else experience this situation a/o have a solution?

Be careful on this...the magneto has to be the correct one for this setup to work properly. The rotor rotates the same speed as the crankshaft and thus fires twice as many times as most engines. Firing interval is (degrees) 180-270-180-90. Spark is once for ignition and once on the exhaust.

Good point about the woodruff key. The mag or impulse should be marked UB9 30 degrees for the VF4. Impulse parts like the ends of the pawls or trip pin can wear also and have seen the impulse hub assembly crack at the keyway slot also. Wear on the drive cup or bad spring will also cause problems. Impulse on mag could be wrong one also? Most V series and VF used a 30 deg. impulse but VH series used a 27 1/2 deg imulse and V460 & V465 used a 18 deg. impulse. The impulse hub assembly with the pawls on should be stamped 30 deg. and has to be taken apart to see or lag angle can be checked on a mag test stand. Lag angle deg. may also be stamped on the mag or tag?

I'm working on a very similar VE4 but haven't tried to start it yet. In an otherwise excellent engine, I found that the Woodruff key for the flywheel was badly mangled, allowing the flywheel to be off by up to 15 degrees.

If you haven't already done so, you might pull the flywheel and check that the key is alinging the wheel properly.
