what to check when buying an engine?

I am going to look at a 6hp fairbanks morse engine that is in almost running condition. There is something broken in the governor apparently.

What should I look for? Should I take a gauge and check compression? Any chronic problems on FM's? Are these good engines?

hi my name is john perusello from milton ontario canada. i would stay away from this unless you whant to get into taking the govener apart that can be a messy job unless you have a clear idea
whats is going on and yes fairbanks morse are a really good engine the were one of two orginal engine manufacturing companys the other was stover
of freeport ill.not a regular problem that i know of you could take a gage if you whant. also check for if it has any cracks in the block could resualt in pressure loss also not an engine you will whant .anyway take care i hope we can keep i touch .john
