Unidentified engine

Today I was given a single cylinder horizontal make and break engine with the following on a plate on top of the cooling tank: Engine Number 285890, RPM 425, HP 5FKW. No other identification I can locate. It's dark green where there's any paint left. The bore is about 5" and the stroke is about 7".
It turns freely and has a little compression. It has a flat pulley bolted to one flywheel and was, I believe, used to power a saw machine that was in the same building.
Any help anyone can offer in identifying it is greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Paul Murray

Sounds like your engine is a 5 horsepower Hercules. It was made in 1923. Can you tell us more about the ignition system and a magneto type, if any? If you need any more info let me know.

Will,
Thanks for the information. I had already considered Fairbanks-Morse or Hercules from the drawings in American Gasoline Engines since 1872 but I hadn't had any time to do any more research. I went to herculesengines.com and the Serial Number fitting the series seems to pretty much settle it.
The ignition is a WICO Type EK magneto firing a Champion X spark plug. Does that mean my calling it a make and break engine is wrong? (this is where I start to learn)
I appreciate the help and information,
Paul Murray

Can you find a copy of "American Gasoline Engines Since 1872, CH Wendell" at a local library? It is profusely illustrated, and should help to identify it.

Bob,
Your suggestion of American Gasoline Engines since 1872 was excellent. As I told Will above, it got me into the ball park.
Again, thank you for the help,
Paul Murray

Bob, Thanks for the advice. I'm on an island off the coast of Maine and we use the Maine State Library, Books-by-Mail and I've requested it from them. I've talked with a life time resident (I've only been here 23 years) who remembers the engine in use but thinks it was last run at least 40 years ago and has been stored (indoors but a pretty damp building perched over salt water) since then. I'll post with more information if and when it becomes available.
Thanks again, Paul Murray
