I just bought a 3hp fairbanks.I think it is a c.Throttle governed,closed crank,800 rpm,has small diameter wide flywheels on it.Has a big metel speed control on the top of the crank cover.Type r mag.It starts but if you do not hold the carb rod back it wants to run wild.The speed lever seems to do nothing.Anyone have any ideas as to what I need to do here to get this under control and to get the speed control working again?I would like to have it run in the 300 to 600 rpm range.

Hello, one of two things could be wrong... 1. your weights are stuck open in the wide open position. 2. speed control broke at/or in the linkage.

Gary is right it could be one of those. but don't forget that you have to start the engine at wide open throttle, and as soon as it starts you need to push the speed controle lever down then it sould run slower. If you are doing that then I tink you should take your crankcase cover off an look at all the linkage, make sure it is all moving and not binding. i had a binding problem on mine. the rod thats comes through the block and pushes down on the throttle lever was sticking so I cleand it up and the hole and she ran great. so any way hope this helps.

I have a Z 3hp with crank cover . It is missing the throttle lever on top of the cover & the carb. Iam also looking for a starter crank. The throttle spring was broke, but am having one made.The J model mag may need some parts later on in the restoration. Any info. would be appreciated.

FM is still in business, and has a webpage listing companies that "support" these old engines, as they do NOT, including "Hit and Miss Enterprises", which would be a good outfit to contact for parts and manuals.

Also, I have seen where folks have gotten lucky, and gotten a reply with some manufacturing data on their engine from the "archivist" at FM.
